Community leaders discuss reviving the Pendleton fair after $11,000 pledged and $1,500 annual state aid authorized. The Third Eastern Oregon Agricultural Society governs with seven commissioners from Umatilla and Morrow counties. Debate covers location and funding, but enthusiasm remains high to proceed.
Umatilla County tops a statewide tally of Sunday school reports for the past year, leading among Oregon’s 25 counties. Data shows Umatilla reporting the highest amount of Sunday school work, with county-wide efforts surpassing all peers in the state.
In Mount Pleasant Iowa on February 24 Eldridge Becker 20 forced entry into Dr Co B Allen home after rejection by Florence Allen 19 He killed Florence wounded her mother and fatally shot himself Becker died instantly leaving a murder suicide behind Florence Allen was the daughter of Dr Co B Allen and the incident shocked the town.
The Umatilla county Sunday School association wrapped up in Athens last evening with 46 schools represented. Delegates from outside Athens totaled 1, and about 20 from Athens attended. Mrs Stephen A Lowell was unanimously re elected president, Mrs A J Owen became secretary, and Miss Eva Betts of Pilot Rock was named treasurer. Delegates praised the meeting as the best yet.
County Clerk Frank Saling conducts the drawing of jurors for the federal grand jury for the coming year. Forty eight names will be submitted from the county. Manager Slater led a team to grade the northwest corner of the campus field scrapers dragged the area to form a solid infield. A backstop and wire netting were installed over hall windows. In Florence on February 24 William K. Vanderbilt and his wife were detained after a slow auto ride collided with a six year old boy. A mob attacked the couple. Vanderbilt drew a revolver and both driver and master were arrested. Mrs Vanderbilt hid in a shop then fled to a hotel as gendarmes intervened. The two men remain prisoners at the barracks.
Privy Councilor Ivanoff director of the Vistula railway was shot and killed this morning by an assassin who escaped. In Odensa a 16 year old girl assassin shot two governors and staff officers, firing six shots from a muffed revolver. The note ends with a quip about reaching the highest by starting lowest.
Washington dispatches detail Tillman Democrats gaining a Senate committee report on the Hepburn bill over Republican hesitation. Elkins derides the move as socialism and vows to oppose any Democratic influence, while the fight over court review provisions promises bitter debate and a prolonged session. Hughes proposes rail reforms amid a B&O restraint of trade complaint and coal company ownership concerns.
The steamer Dora, arriving at Seattle in fog and damaged, reports loss of rider and coal, crew injured, and boilers broken after a storm. The vessel rode with helm damaged, and crew used lamps and oil for heat. Cargo fuelled food use and no land sighted during eight days at sea. Only rainwater collected for sanitation.
New York Feb 24. H H Rogers is said to suffer serious liver disease but he stayed in his office all week and did not deny the report. A breakdown is not indicated nor anticipated and he remains active in his work.
Moblie Alabama February 24 a noon tornado struck Hattiesburg carrying by report demolished several buildings and caused two fatalities.

Hearing set for March 1 as issues include extradition statutes and constitutional challenges. Prisoners moved from the penitentiary to Caldwell with guards and legal counsel, grand jury deliberations underway.
Revenue officers led by Marshal Blatt and Deputy Collector Holliday attempted an arrest of Palro Sloane Perry Sloane and Henry Short in Henderson Kentucky. The Sloanes were killed and Holliday wounded seriously during the clash.
Seattle February 26 The captain of the tug Czar testified he did not know the coast well and was afraid to approach too near the Valencia wreck. The on scene testimony described his uncertainty about navigation and his apprehension while discussing the incident.
A St. Paul passenger train struck an interurban car at Bayview this morning injuring sixteen others. Sixteen persons were hurt and three were fatally crushed beyond recognition in the Milwaukee incident dated February 24.

Dr W G Cole of this city announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for state senator from Umatilla Morrow and Union counties. With no other Republican rivals yet named it’s viewed as likely he will be the party nominee. If nominated his anticipated opponent would be Senator Walter M Pitre, recently interested by Umatilla county Democrats after signaling plans to run.
Ex Senator G W Proebstel of Weston filed his petition for the nomination as state senator from Umatilla county. He served a four year term and helped enact the slot machine law. He pledges to serve the people and will run an active campaign for the primary.
In Stockton California on February 24 officials exhumed the son of James Barnett. Toxicology confirms mercury caused his death and links the entire Barnett family to mercury poisoning. A full investigation is underway by the district attorney and authorities.
Five frame business houses burned in Beckwith near Reno on February 24. The blaze started in a lodging house from a candle. The town lacking fire protection faced a difficult effort to save structures, with losses estimated at 7000 dollars.
A blaze at Kenyon Military Academy destroyed four dormitories. Three students James Fuller Warren Winfield Kunkle and J Edward Henderson are missing and presumed dead. three others, including Prof F R Salaway, are severely or badly injured. Seventy five cadets escaped as authorities notify parents. Incendiary origin suspected.
Queen Faye I will appear tonight for the last time at the Eagles Bond carnival. At o clock she will ascend the throne and end her reign surrounded by attendants. A $7 Mamond ring will be presented by carnival managers. The evening features vaudeville and the Book Agent as an afterpiece. Tomorrow night the carnival’s wedding proceeds unless unforeseen delays occur. Bernard Conlin, the carnival contra-tenor, will perform the "Holy City" tomorrow evening.
At a Pendleton area meeting the Umatilla County Development League formed a temporary structure with $300 pledged for immediate expenses. Leaders including C. E. Roosevelt and Bert Huffman set up committees to draw up action plans, assess county-wide levies, and appoint a three-member executive to oversee agents and literature distribution.
