Philadelphia scene of worker clashes as Rapid Transit tries to run nonunion cars. Police and 3000 specials safeguard car barns while 297 cars are burned and scores injured. Riots, arrests, and near hangings mark the day as union laborers consider broader action.
London reports indicate about a hundred people have died in the last 48 hours as storms lash the south and eastern coasts. A steamer drifted helplessly off Cat Craig in Scotland and is believed to have foundered with heavy property damage expected along the coastline.
Nelsons manager John R Robinson predicts a twenty five round bout at Point Richmond with Wolgast. He says Wolgast is a mauler not a knockout artist while Nelson shows speed stamina and harder punches as he seeks a longer fight. Robinson expects Wolgast to maul early then tire and Nelsons experience to prevail.
President Lewis of the United Mine Workers announced a joint conference between miners and operators to avert a strike. He said miners in Ohio Pennsylvania Michigan Indiana and possibly Illinois will receive wage advances and a preliminary Cincinnati meeting will coordinate a call for a joint conference to settle the wage scale. Both sides show willingness to concede demands to prevent a great industrial struggle.
At Azusa California, near Pasadena, two women died and a man was fatally injured when the Santa Fe railroad limited collided with an automobile. The victims were Mrs. Anna Martin of Pasadena and Miss Flora McEwen of Pasadena. Passenger Louie Anderson and Howard Martin survived with minor injuries. Anderson, president of the Anderson Investment Company, was driving. his 3-year-old son survived uninjured. The accident occurred where the street crosses the railroad, where a lumber yard blocks view of the track, making the train’s approach invisible until too late.
