Salem February 21 Special Governor Chamberlain appoints Samuel White of Baker City as circuit Judge in the new eighth district for Baker county. Claire Crawford of Union named district judge in the tenth district covering Union and Wallowa. Judge Robert Eakin of Union presides over the tenth and Leroy Lomax is attorney in the eighth. Crawford and White are Democrats. Lawrence T. Farin, a Republican, named Judge of the second district in Douglas county.

Nine Bodies Recovered In Virginia Mine Blast Tragedy

Birmingham, Feb. 21 A Virginia mine explosion trapped 160 miners yesterday. Rescue work continued through the night with 300 rescuers 1000 feet below the surface. By 9 o'clock nine bodies were recovered, many nearly unrecognizable, as afterdamp and gas hinder the search. The blast followed a dry shot that touched near one shaft, causing flames and a massive collapse.
