In late February a Montana man named Eisler reported losing 1942 dollars to three Walla Walla gamblers after a card game in Pasco. A forged Farmers Savings Bank check was cashed Saturday with John Smalls, saloonkeeper, identifying the payer as one of the culprits. The three men fled north on a train, while bank officials withheld names.

Federal Judge Wolverton ruled that land buyers on Umatilla reservation under the 1886 act cannot again acquire land under the 1902 sale. The Hoover Jones contest centered on whether Jones, who bought 160 acres of untimbered land earlier, could purchase again. The La Grande office ruled for Hoover, but the General Land Office reversed, and the department upheld the reversal in court. Tragic overboard act on Plymouth steamer

A despondent mother aboard the Fall River Plymouth wine steamship threw her three children overboard and then jumped herself. She left a note to John Waters of Brooklyn, NS, claiming she could not live and would not leave the children behind. The three children were a girl, a boy, and a baby.

Will Build A Branch From Snake River In Washington

The Portland and Seattle Railway filed a certificate with the secretary of state detailing a proposed eight mile branch in Washington from the main line near the Snake and Palouse rivers along the north bank to Texas Ferry. The meeting at Portland on February 17 elected L C Gilman as acting president in the absence of M Levy. M P Martin attested the certificate. The Portland and Seattle forms part of the HII system.

Coal Field Prospects Near Grand Ronde On New Mine

Walla Walla party including John D. Lamb Samuel Loner and H B Kershaw returned from Anstone on the Grande Ronde river after a week inspecting J P Vollmer company mines at Antenne. They report tunneling 200 feet with a 49 foot wide seam and a large coal deposit resembling Roslyn with extensive surface cropping nearby. Vollmer plans to form a new company to lease and develop the property.

Trial set as water seller case dismissed for lack of evidence

Huggins was discharged after last night’s arrest on charges of selling water to Indians. This morning the case was set for 1:30 but dismissed at the City Attorney Carter’s request for insufficient evidence to convict.
