Washington February 17 Congressmen Hay of Virginia and Fregerald of New York sharply condemned Richmond Pearson Hobson for embattling their stance on the army appropriation bill. Hobson was absent yesterday when a claim was inserted in the congressional record. Hoyden denounced it as cowardly without speaking on the floor.
Washington February 17 House Investigation Committee reports in probe of the sugar trust that recommendations to curb abuse lie with standing committees. It says no need for hyb combines and cites over capitalization driving up living costs.
Coroner Ralph Folsom and Sheriff T D Taylor investigated a body found by a motor car operator near Barnhart. Identity is uncertain with possible names A J Weaver or J A Morrell based on a pawn ticket and a notebook. Cause of death remains unclear whether accident or foul play. The dead man, about 28, wore towel laborer garb and carried few items. The morgue holds the body awaiting further inquiry as El Paso residents voice local excitement.

Ft Wayne Feb 17 The Chicago Limited on the Pennsylvania collided with a wreck train near Larwill. Four workmen in the wrecker were killed and ten others injured. The dead are P Welgand Frank Holtman EB Stump and August Bailey Burned to death of the latter two.
Pendleton lodge No 258 reports the Elks Minstrels earned a net profit of at least 4400 over two nights with receipts totaling 700 and expenses around 200. Carl Cogley notes the show's success surpasses earlier efforts like the Commercial club gymnasium event which netted 420.
United States troops guard the Mexican consulate in El Paso after a demonstration demanding the release of American soldiers who accidentally invaded. L Sherwood, a solicitor, ran away with his wife's sister Nella Stillwell a teen from Oregon on New Year's Day. A farewell note claimed they would live in heaven and never return. Mrs Sherwood earlier banished Nella after suspecting her of influencing her husband.
Agan Johnson a 19 year old soprano at First Baptist church in Pasadena died after her mother gave strychnine by mistake while treating a cold. Authorities report the tragedy occurred when the mother misread her medicine. The victim was the daughter of a wealthy contractor and the case has drawn local concern.
A Seattle arrest centers on R H McWhorter a Taco Ma secretary and trust officer tied to the Oregon Washington Trust and Columbia River Orchard firms. Returning from Salem Assessor C P Strain described the state assessors meeting as mixed though he favored some results. He opposed blanket approval of all measures and fought proposed amendments to funnel missed railroad and public service tax revenue to the state.
