Convict goods rarely compete with free labor in-state, but do in other states.
In Springfield on February 1 the State Federation of Labor recommended withdrawal from military service. New measures punish anyone trying to influence citizens not to enlist or persuading members of the state militia to withdraw from service.
On February 15 in Farmnereville Virginia William Tuffing and Moses Alll, both Black men, were hanged for the murder of Postmaster John Rubble. Ruffing reportedly broke the rope and climbed back up the scaffold, dying in agony after a second death. In Ellisville a bank safe was blown this morning with 2000 pounds stolen.
A. Brandon reports severe labor shortages delaying repairs on the Spokane Branch and the Walla Walla Pendleton line. He shipped a large crew to Cold Springs to fix damage but desertions reduced men available, forcing extra transports from Umatilla and ongoing requests for labor to reestablish service.
The crop report presented to the legislature states 1900 had the largest harvest in the province's history. It notes a sharp rise in production of both hard and creamery butters, with output up about 50 percent from prior years and prices higher than in many years.
Salem, Feb 15. The Oregon House adopted a bill by Senator Smith to create only two normal schools in the state.
