Portland, Ore February 12 H B E Walker a well known sheep buyer employed by Frye Co of Seattle fell dead at the Union Stockyards in North Portland while inspecting sheep to be purchased for his company. Death is believed to be due to heart trouble. Walker had for years served the Seattle firm and was regarded as one of the northwest's best judges of sheep.
New York reports that claims totaling 8,027,874 for loss of life property and injuries from the Titanic disaster were filed with White Star Line. The deadline passed unless extended by the circuit court of appeals. Largest claim is 1,000,000 by Mrs Henry B Harris widow of the manager.
London reports the Terra Nova carried survivors of Scott’s party. The Admiralty will award the Died in Action badge to Capt Scott and his companions. Bodies of Scott Wilson and Bowers found. A 16 year old high school student Lloyd Hall of 623 Pine Street was killed by an accidental .22 rifle discharge in his home. The gun, loaded with cartridges, fired as he handed it to his sister while preparing for school. The bullet struck near the heart, causing instant death. His uncle Ed McBroom and neighbors aided the family as authorities informed his father, away at Gur Dane. News described a second fatal accident within the hour nearby.
President elect Wilson indicated he would like William F. McCombs to remain chairman of the Democratic National Committee after March 4. McCombs has scheduled a March 6 committee meeting, and Wilson said he hopes McCombs does not resign.
