Governor Taft submitted a memorandum stating that during a public session with sugar and tobacco interests a 7 cent tariff cut was favored while a 50 percent cut would nearly prohibit the tariff. He called the claim exaggerated and suggested the officials implied a sale of public property in cities.
Rear Admiral Cromwell also to retire as the Navy ends service for Admiral Sampson tonight at midnight. The Boston Navy Yard commander has weakened under illness and will be relieved by Crowinshield. The era of continuous duty and shifting assignments marks a transition as both leaders depart.
