Across the border arm shipments surge as Huerta tightens grip and Villa mobilizes. Gen Huerta stays in Chapultepec as rebels seize Tampico and Torreon preparations accelerate with a possible withdrawal of U.S. troops. In New Orleans 13,900 rifles and over 15 million rounds are packed for Mexico.
The Monroe, once the staunch vessel of the Old Dominion Line, sank after colliding with the Nantucket off the Virginia coast near Winter Quarter Shoals. Forty four persons were drowned. Captain Johnson commanded the Monroe and ordered a stop as distress signals from the Nantucket were heard. An investigation by the Department of Commerce will be conducted by the Bureau of Navigation and the Steamboat Inspection Service.
In San Diego Captain A S Cowen of the U S Army Aviation Corps at North Island states no aviator in the United States can successfully cross the ocean in an aeroplane. He concedes cross country flights have been done, but cross ocean travel remains unlikely for now despite current progress.
Francis Xavier Matthieu, the Frenchman whose vote at the Champoeg convention on May 4, 1843, helped keep Oregon under the United States, died at his Aurora home aged 96. The gathering decided whether the region would be under British or American rule.
Waukegan Illinois February 4 Five women of Yalo accused of riding neighbor Mrs John Richardson out of the village on a rail were fined 100 each by Judge Charles Donnelly They were given three days to raise the money with possible jail if not forthcoming The leader was Emma Stadfeldt known as Captain Emma The case arose from village gossip involving her brother in law and the raid ended with a stern censure from the judge who noted their sex spared them the maximum penalty
On February 4 two convicts at the state prison near Walla Walla tried to escape for the second time in ten days. George Miller of Colfax and Richard Livingston of Spokane planned to dig through a brick wall into the jute mill then climb out. They were found in the outdoor lavatory near the jute mill wall before succeeding. Miller had previously escaped by hiding in the prison well.
INDIANAPOLIS Feb 4 Final adjournment of the twenty fourth convention of the United Mine Workers of America, in session since January 20, was taken last night. St. Louis was chosen as the convention city in 1916 over Kansas City by a small vote.
Washington report notes Senator Ransdell introduced a constitutional amendment to ban absolute divorce while allowing remarriage. He argues the move counters rising divorce rates, citing England 1911 with 656 divorces and the United States 1900 at 86 per hundred thousand.

Panama Feb. 4 Rebels in Ecuador are preparing to proclaim a new government. Reports from Guayaquil say their campaign has progressed and they demand the resignation of President Leonidas Plaza, whom they blame for the 1912 lynching of President Alfaro in Quito.
New York residents Joseph Cassidy former Democratic boss of Queens County and former Congressman Willett Jr were convicted of corrupt activities to influence the state supreme court nomination. Cassidy drew 15 months in prison and a $1000 fine Willett Jr received a similar sentence.
Washington Feb 4 The announcement that a suffrage constitutional amendment is dead as far as the Democratic party is concerned came from Underwood the house leader He said the house judiciary committee was empowered to report out the amendment but he refused to back a favorable report He stressed suffrage should be governed by states not the national government.
Baltimore report states George W. Mayer of Denver, a business man, died after two weeks in Baltimore where he sought radium treatment. He reportedly tried every other method to effect a cure.

Joseph V. Tallman was chosen again to head the Pendleton Commercial Association for another year. The entire list of officers and directors was unanimously re-elected amid strong endorsement of Tallman’s administration. The group also endorsed continuing directors and announced the Paradise Project support at a special meeting last Friday.
With the primary nominating convention over three months away local political activity remains subdued. Rumors circulate of a Republican caucus and possible candidacies for county judge clerk and commissioner, with figures like Cockburn Maloney Saling Yeager Harrah Betts Hodgins and others named as potential contenders. Several officials including Sheriff Taylor Treasurer Bradley and Recorder Burroughs are expected to seek reelection. Senator Burges may retire from the Senate seat amid no firm declarations.
Governor West said he would ask President Wilson to delay dissolving the Southern Pacific and Central Pacific lines until an investigation allows shippers and others to present contentions. He warned that divorcing the lines would not benefit Oregon and would retard state development and injure shipping interests, a view echoed by Railroad Commissioner Chairman Miller. Miller cited hardship for Oregon and possible Central Pacific transfer to Union Pacific, noting broad local opposition in Grants Pass, the Willamette Valley, and eastern Oregon.
A jury found Bert Pixler guilty after under an hour of deliberation of larceny of ten cattle from Matthew Slewship. Pixler claimed purchase from a mysterious Indian and loan from attorney Homer I Watt, with trial noting ownership dispute and potential federal involvement for related parties. Rent payments by New York City for polling places totaled 760 Q00.
