J. W. Morrow asks the city council to order Aura Street vacated at once and demands full compliance. The representative warns that delaying will postpone progress on the long desired depot structure and hinder timely construction.
J W Morrow told an East Oregonian reporter there will be no new depot built in Pendleton unless the city grants a concession vacating Aura street portion. If concession is given today he will buy the land and start erection within 40 days. Councilman Montgomery said the railroad cannot close a principal street and the concession cannot be granted.
City and railroad leaders weigh a new depot with Aura and Lilleth streets to be vacated. A remonstrance from south Pendleton property owners risks lawsuits or injunctions against the project. J W Morrow presented plans showing the ground to be acquired, including Arnold and Vorel properties, to move the round house and permit immediate building of the depot. The company vows a handsome depot if the streets are vacated and the property acquired.
Nashville Tenn Feb 4 The house passed over the governor veto by 64 to 87 the bill prohibiting the manufacture of liquor in Tennessee. The bill becomes effective Jan 1 1910. It has already passed the senate.
San Francisco reports fear for the safety of the Buffalo, a converted transport, four days overdue. Hawaiian wireless messages say last heard from the vessel when she was two days at sea. It was understood the Buffalo would stay within wireless range except for two days of the voyage to San Francisco.
Jose F. Navarro, famed builder of the first elevated railroad and the first modern apartment house, died today in New York of heart trouble.
Chicago Feb 4. It was announced that the Canadian Northern road will immediately extend its line to Vancouver British Columbia after securing satisfactory arrangements with the British Columbia provinces.
In the Potts School House case, two witnesses were cross examined. Dan Hicks’s testimony ends while William Cartwright describes the prior conversation. Diagrams and a photo illustrate principal positions. Defense argues self defense. prosecution says McBroom turned to flee when the gun fired. Most witnesses repeat prior testimony with a few new ones expected.
In a Jamaica winter letter to the East Oregonian Tassey Stewart, a Mil tonite traveler, says he dislikes the West Indian climate for a permanent home. He plans to return to Oregon via Cuba, Mexico and California, praising the Panama Canal project and its workers, and longing for cool Oregon air. He notes Jamaica as pleasant but too hot, with seventy two degrees the coolest seen there.
Salem Feb 4 Portland's bill to abolish compulsory pilotage consumed the house forenoon. It would put Columbia river shipping under the same basis as Puget Sound. The house also passed a bill granting at least 200 for each school district in the state. A new senate bill would publish supreme court reports and regulate long distance telephones. Southern Oregon lawmakers united for a 100000 Crater Lake auto road appropriation. The senate approved twenty thousand for fisheries and hydes.
Salem news reports talks that Multnomah county circuit judgeship may go to William Gatens, governor's private secretary, if Senate passes the bill. Governor Chamberlain has not decided on needing an extra judge and may appoint Gatens if favored. Gatens, formerly deputy district attorney, remains a Portland resident.
Oklahoma lawmakers denounce the Muskogee land fraud indictment of Governor Charles N Haskell as the result of a supposed Roosevelt and Hearst plot. Action on the resolution is deferred. Haskell may appear without personal attendance as the grand jury's charges name Haskell and six others including F B Severera and C W Turner. A $5,000 bond is arranged with supporters signing.
In St. Louis on February 4 attorney M L Mott representing the Creek Nation warned that uncovering land frauds will bring deep disgrace to the people of Oklahoma. He urged action to expose the schemes and protect tribal lands and rights.
Reports from Washington on February 4 indicate hundreds of Americans living in Honduras fear retroactivity of the new extradition treaty. Many are refugees from justice who have allegedly evaded U.S. law, some in poverty, others with wealth, living under assumed names in the capital and other cities. If retroactive, some may be brought to the United States for trial, though convictions seem unlikely and punishment may be lifelong exile in Honduras.
Helena Mont Feb 4 Immediate after hearing of the Chinese African wedding yesterday the legislature passed the miscegenation bill unanimously. The intermarriage of all races and nationalities has been a long debated subject in the state with many unhappy entanglements noted. Severe penalties are provided for those forming such marriages.
Washington February 4. President Roosevelt announced that Louis D. Loeb, his private secretary, will be the next collector of the Port of New York. It is understood Taft will nominate him directly after the inauguration.
All old soldiers are requested to meet at the office of Peter West on Garden Street Saturday afternoon at 2 o clock to arrange participation in the Lincoln Day Memorial exercises.
Minneapolis news confirms Thos F Lowery, a railroad magnate and president of the Twin City Rapid Transit and Minneapolis St. Paul and Salt St. Marie Railroad companies, died today in Minneapolis at age 66.
M. F. Marsten has resigned as manager of the Pacific States Telephone and Telegraph Co local office. He will be succeeded this month by L. G. McLellan of Spokane after serving in charge for several months, following W. D. Buford.
Brigadier General Daniel H. Brush, formerly in command of the Department of the Columbia, is ordered to the Philippines to take command of the Department of Luzon and will depart on the transport from San Francisco. This marks his fourth assignment to the Islands. Brigadier General John J. Pershing, previously at Fort William McKinley, is reassigned as commanding officer of the Department of Mindanao, replacing Brigadier General Tasks H. Bills who moves to Washington as assistant chief of staff.
Florin G. Lee, a young student with total memory loss, returned from Los Angeles to Riverside with his father and relatives. He did not recognize his father and conversed as a stranger, yet calmly listened to familiar Riverside scenes described by his father. Doctors attribute the condition to overwork and expect rest among relatives to aid recovery.
Minority stockholders of the Chicago Terminal Transfer company allege fraud by the Chicago & Alton, Baltimore and Ohio, and Messrs Gould, Heddimian and Stillman. They claim in 1906 the terminal company mortgaged its property and a lease to form a new line Chicago to St Louis, paying 15 million at a percent, to keep Alton in check. The Baltimore & Ohio then moved to foreclose two years ago.
In Olympia Washington on February 4 the anti saloon league local option bill won a victory as Palmer's bill was defeated 69 to 36. The judiciary committee issued three reports on local option bills with varied recommendations. The race track bill passed the house with an emergency clause but the senate rejected the clause, foreshadowing a possible deadlock between houses over the emergency provision.
New York February 4. Count Bertstorff the German ambassador to the United States told members of the chamber of commerce that the United States and Germany cherish mutual friendship. He said the nations’ unbroken ties and peaceful commercial rivalry signal enduring peace and that when the gates of commerce open, peace reigns.
San Francisco reports heavyweight champion Jack Johnson will leave Brisbane February 17 for Vancouver to promote a 20 round title match between Lew Powell and Packey McFarland on Washington's Birthday. Articles to be signed tonight.
London reports Carrie Nation was fined seven dollars and fifty cents for thrusting an umbrella through a car window on an underground train where a cigarette advertisement appeared.
Washington D C Feb 4 Rep Bartholdt of Missouri announced that Charles H Nagel of St Louis would be Secretary of Interior or Commerce in the current administration. The statement ties Nagel to high level cabinet potential amid ongoing Washington politics.
Washington February 4 Senate approved a public building appropriation intended for Astoria but reduced the amount from 500000 to 175000. Poulton of DIT announced the updated funding plan as the measure advanced.
