Desultory fighting and mediation efforts fill reports from Asia and Europe. General Stoesmel arrives in Colombo denying Port Arthur surrender claims as the military chest has dwindled to 15 rubles. A two day storm triggers a great torrent of water in the Santa Ana river and Santa Mateo canyon. Fencing and outbuildings are ruined and stock drowned. Railroad traffic is disrupted with washouts noted. three Southern Pacific bridges are out and more washouts feared.

Two men from Welser died in a lodging house blaze, and a strike may widen as 600 government workers at the Lewis and Clark exposition consider joining.
A New York Central wreck near Utica New York in the early hours left two dead and about twenty injured. An opposite direction train collided with a Buffalo night Pullman service, derailing eight cars as the engine toppled. Names given include John Bronn and John Allen.
The Oregon Daily Journal reports the new four story Piveakera hotel will nearly double the space of the burned building. It fronts 112 feet on the ocean with two wings back, 60 by 40 feet, and includes fireproof construction, extensive porches, large dining and parlor rooms, multiple baths, modern conveniences, electric bells, two standby tanks with 2500 gallons each, and ocean views from the grounds toward the rock, North Head lighthouse, and a broad beach expanse.
J P Bonten bar dealer retires and offers nicotine stock in a sale. Smokers supplies offered in a room until disposed of. Call a Hanton in Matlock block near Raider's Furniture. Geimler Opera House in Chic huli Washington burned, causing 810000 in damage and major damage to nearby properties.
Weston Normal President French returns from Salem amid heated legislative debate over state normal schools. It appears Drain may be discontinued while Weston and other campuses seek continued support. Projections show $26,000 maintenance and $26,000 for a new dormitory. Oregon lags California and Washington in normal college funding.
