A tumultuous scene unfolds as Wisconsin Senator Robert M. La Follette delivers a sharp tongue tirade in the teeth of reporters. Indignant editors respond with hisses as the exchange intensifies during a public appearance reporting on press relations.
Senator La Follette denounced the kept press as a menace to the nation during a Philadelphia banquet. He warned of growing advertising centralization and media control, said to threaten magazines, and faced hostile reaction from journalists in Boston.
In Helix Oregon on February 3 Dick Lee formerly of Pendleton attempted to shoot Charlen Hopper, manager of the Farmers' Mutual Warehouse. Lee, after a standoff with a posse, hid his revolver in a hay mow and resisted arrest during a several minute struggle before officers secured him for county authorities. Hopper, about 30, had recently divorced from his Idaho-based wife who lives with their children in Caldwell.
An icy blast hit Chicago with six below zero and predicted twelve below tonight. The extreme cold spreads to the Great Lakes and Rock Mountain regions, touching Canada in a wide cold spell.
Portland report says Wong Si Sum and Lew Soon, Chinese men arrested for Seid Bing's murder, denied involvement after intense questioning. Wong remained calm and smiling while Lew, described as nervous, claims the pair killed Seid during a fight and that a woman, Ung Goey, was present. Lew is identified as a San Francisco saloon man.

San Francisco Feb 3 The Southern Pacific filed a 3 220 918 suit in federal court against John and Adolph Spreckles alleging a 1906 contract with the Hartiman system to fund a San Diego to Yuma railroad was breached. The claim centers on 2 867 000 allegedly loaned to the Spreckles railroad plus interest.
In Los Angeles on February 3, Ortie McManigal is expected to arrive from Indianapolis as the government’s principal witness in the trials of Tinetmoe Joahhbaneen Clancy and Munsey for alleged nationwide dynamiting conspiracy.
Lawrence Mass Feb 3 The first real effort to settle the textile workers strike that has convulsed the city emerged when James Remzi treasurer of a central labor union called a meeting of workers representatives to decide on peace plans and a relief fund for strikers.
The Baptist meeting drew a larger crowd than the night before with J Bruce Evans preaching with earnestness. The young evangelist moved many to tears and laughter as music and testimony filled the service. Two individuals took the stand for a better life. Evans, composer of His Grace Is Enough For Me, led the hymnody. Baptisms are planned for Sunday night. Rev Evans preaches tonight and twice on Sunday.
W P Burk of Twin Falls Idaho arrives to arrange a sale of 40 work mules next Saturday afternoon at the Oregon-Feed yard. The animals will be shipped from Idaho the latter part of next week.
A letter received by Will M. Peterson from A B McEwen, in Europe, details a whirlwind tour of Scotland Ireland London Paris Berlin with plans to sail February 3 on the President Grant back to the United States and likely return to Pendleton around February 21 or 22. He sends regards to Wilson and Pendleton friends.
The O A C Glee Club plans a eastern Oregon tour starting February 12 from Corvallis with 40 members the largest ever to visit eastern Oregon. A special Pullman car will be chartered for travel to avoid hotel needs. They perform February 15 at the Hellig in Portland and February 22 at Oregon theater followed by a dance at Eagle Woodman hall hosted by local alumni and students.

In Independence Jackson County court a divorce suit by May Choat against LaFayette Cheat is heard amid claims of extreme cruelty. Choat alleges Cheat drove her in fields hitched to a harrow, prompting jail time for Cheat on a separate felonious assault charge after the incidents.
President Taft signed a proclamation endorsing the San Francisco Panama-Pacific exposition inviting all nations to exhibit at the 1915 fair in Washington D C on February 3.
New York Feb 3 Wireless dispatches from the Norwegian steamer Texas report seeing a burning vessel northeast of the Virginia capes. The ship’s identity is not known but is believed to be a Liverpool freighter.
Fourteen boats in Portsmouth attempt to raise the submarine AS but the hoist failed today. The heavy load parted and seven men were injured in the mishap.
La Grande Oregon daily Morning Star announces in its columns that after a few more issues it will stop being published as a daily newspaper.
In San Francisco Chinatown two Sunmen of the Sin Suey tong shot at Hop Sing tong members after one of their men was killed. Police intervened as two tong leaders died and two others were fatally wounded. Ah Wng arrested and Ah Joe subdued by a plumber. Many suspects detained.
