Pioneering Grange Appeals for Farmers’ Economic Unity
A letter to the editor from January 24 1880 defends the Farmers Grange as the United States’ vital advocate for agriculture. It argues organization is essential, urges expansion from coast to coast, and calls for action to curb monopolies, regulate futures trading, and reduce costs for Eastern Oregon farmers. The writer stresses the Grange’s aims to raise crop quality and income, support honest government, and unite farmers across regions in pursuit of fair policy and widespread prosperity.

United States Indian inspector C Saunders arrived from Washington on Tuesday and conducted an on site inquiry at the Umatilla agency. A grand council followed with agents and chiefs including Too, Young Chief Showeway and Cush Cish. They debated alleged Digainee marriages Indian dancing and fines collected by the agent, with Showeway launching pointed criticisms of Coffey’s administration. The outcome remains undisclosed, but reports say further action is possible in a week or two.
