Government to Drain Lakes on Umatilla Project
Hermiston Mayor Ross Newport announced plans to drain artificial ponds formed on the Umatilla project. A ditch will lower the largest lake by one foot, exposing about 200 acres. Water will be pumped for reuse on reclaimed lands, using electricity from a power plant at the A C drop without diverting irrigation water. The water is reported to be alkali free and suitable for a second use.
