Piermod Italy December 30 Queen Helena and the king visited Messina amid a devastating quake. Survivors wailed and fainted as hundreds of dead filled the streets. The king leads rescue efforts while trains bring supplies and volunteers. The queen nears collapse as casualties mount.
Colonia Sicily December 30 Queen Helena riding with the king encountered a collapsed building in Messina. The infant trapped within drew the queen who entered the ruin against the king’s protest and carried the child to a relief boat.
Berlin reports that both the American and German consulates in Messina were wiped out by the quake and tidal wave, a government telegram received via Rome confirms.
Washington BD Dec 3 The state department received a Malta dispatch from Consul William Gale reporting Consul Arthur Cheney and his wife are both dead at Messina and their bodies have not been recovered.
Washington Dec 30 The executive committee of the National Red Cross decided at a meeting to send fifty thousand dollars to the Italian Red Cross Society to aid relief efforts in Italy.

Robbers held Wellston Oklahoma residents at bay for three hours then looted the bank escaping with 5000 dollars. They used four nitro glycerin charges to blast vaults as townspeople gathered, but were kept back by revolvers.

In Portland Oregon on December J Owen Jack Hayes alias Jack Walton pleaded guilty before Judge Gantenbein to the O R and WN express car robbery. Hayes received 12 years in prison after denying guilt despite his partner Burkes confessing. The third man known as the Swene remains at large. Burks also pleaded guilty and drew four years.

Washington December 30 Senator Perkins of California said he received a letter from Roosevelt urging him to join in recreating an American embassy at Pekin to replace the present legation in the Chinese capital.
Edward F. Beals of the Weather Bureau visits Pendleton to organize county headwater rainfall reporting for irrigation. Observers will record precipitation on streams including Umatilla Birch McKay Meacham and Dry creeks with reports sent to Portland. Beals plans Weston observers and McKay creek trip while Senator C J Smith backs a permanent Pendleton station and county station proposals.
Mrs Helen M Kelly mother in law of Frank Gould reports loss of five thousand dollars in currency and jewelry after a strange man escorted her to a hotel following a village accident when a horse she drove collapsed dead. Only the chain of her dateline bag remained after the man left the scene.
