Reports from Chicago and New York indicate a weak wheat market with December and January prices hovering around just over one dollar. San Francisco and Livorno notes mention quiet trading and varying seasonal figures for wheat into year end.
Henry Kappel shot and killed what was described as the largest cougar ever killed on Sanvies Island after a lengthy struggle. The event followed a hunt that morning and involved the animal being shot twice and having its throat cut.
The steamboat John H Hanna burning at Plaquemine Louisiana resulted in heavy loss of life with estimates of about thirty perished and many others missing or injured. The vessel built in 1870 at Madison columns stood 977 tons and carried cotton downriver from Monroe with 1000 bales on board plus added cargo. Rescue efforts opened City Central hotels to survivors while investigators seek origin of the blaze.
Prominent Tonchet residents led by H Hall Alex Goetaven John Alien Albert Burne and Chrisio Smith were arrested by Detective Campbell for allegedly attempting to wreck O K and N trains by driving stock on the tracks near Walla Walla. Other notes include a railroad robbery near Clip per Gap with two armed men and a list of unrelated incidents across the West.
