Christmas on the Umatilla River a Whitman feast remembered
The piece recalls Marcus Whitman’s Christmas visit to Cayuse wigwam and the Whitman era on the Umatilla and Walla Walla frontier. Whirlwind recounts the feast and shared prayer, noting Whitman’s kindness, the Indians’ hospitality, and the lasting memory of a white man’s gospel in a 1844 Christmas scene.
