Washington reports that the British steamer Saint Ursula was torpedoed with any Americans aboard, with warning not given. The Americans were aboard when the attack occurred.
Averill of the U S biological survey cites Mrs H L Tucker wife of a Richland Washington government trapper as a more dangerous predator hunter than her husband. Dressed in no male clothes she oversees daily trap rounds and tracks, scenting as well or better than her husband who is paid for the beasts caught. Tucker recently rode a new saddle mount that threw him, then he rode again to conquer it. Averill notes Mrs Tucker has applied for a government trapping appointment.
A night letter from Richard Devine reports Pendleton’s contingent of the Idaho regiment leaving Nogales on December 19 en route to Boise via Battle and Ogden. The men are in good spirits and expect to reach Boise in about three weeks. Several Pendleton boys received discharges at Nogales and will remain to work there. The message extends Christmas wishes to Pendleton. twenty-one locals are noted in the Grangeville company of the Second Idaho on the border, with most slated to return except for a few discharged at Nogales.
Washington December 21 President Wilkins nomination of Commander Ralph Earle as chief of the ordnance bureau with rank of rear admiral had been sent to the senate for confirmation.

Detroit December 21 General Moumger Kimgenemith announced the Ford plant will close tomorrow until January 3 to ease railroad congestion. About two thousand employees will not be paid during the suspension, cutting wage losses to around two million dollars. The plant will reduce the output of riveted freight cars to about twenty five thousand, with 2500 built daily, as a humane measure to prevent rail congestion and conserve fuel and labor for essential freight movement.
New York December 21 The Union Pacific has declared an extra dividend of two percent on common stock with a bonus of one month's salary to employees earning eighteen hundred dollars.
The Senate Judiciary committee favorably reported the national prohibitional bill. It provides absolute prohibition for the United States. Senators Reed Culbernon and Brandegee voted against it. The bill bans sale manufacture and transportation of intoxicating liquor within the United States including imports and all territories.
Clarence Baker a 14 year old boy from Woodlaw suffered a severe injury while repairing a revolving saw. His coat sleeve caught in the blade, severing his right arm between the wrist and elbow. He was brought to St Anthony's hospital for treatment and is reported to be recovering satisfactorily. His mother is away in Portland and unable to be reached.
Special to the East Oregonian reports today s market activity with bid quotes and price ranges for commodities in Portland. Merchants Exchange bids include Club 1.45 blueatem 1.29, while London and Liverpool quotes show spot prices and grain, coal, and wheat style notes.
