Hood River robbers boarded a train near Hood River and blew open an express car with nitroglycerine. The crew escaped with a largely amateur haul consisting of a valuable package and cheap jewelry. An express messenger saved the principal valuables. Authorities pursued the suspects toward the Portland outskirts.
Two men described as robbers and bombers were arrested near Portland after a daylight hold up and dynamiting. A stolen package valued at about 700 dollars remained missing. A tramp on a train claims he can identify the suspects.
Four masked men halted Wethound train No 1 nine miles east of Portland last night after boarding at Hood River. Express messenger Huff hid valuables and helped secure a portion of the loot while the robbers forced entry with nitro glycerine. A special train and posse pursue, but the engine was later brought to Montavila and the robbers vanished.
The text describes a robbery where two men entered the car area in anger over money, one a Swede with a whitened face and another masked. A third man guarded the car’s guard, while a fourth watched the engineer, as the robbers swore and searched for cash.

In the Seattle labor temple last night a clash during a socialist meeting ended with W. P. Parks expelled and his wife Winnie Parks fleeing amid a chair fight. Police intervened as sergeants-at-arms escorted several combatants from the hall and one man was struck in the face amid chaotic melee among local socialists and visiting organizers.
In Los Angeles on December 18 Troy Knabenshie tried to show how an airship could fly unseen at night and devastate a city with explosives. The flight failed but the craft was audible and visible. a harmless bomb was dropped on the city hall later found by authorities. Knabenshie was with George Denslor, the machinist.
Harrisburg Pa Dec 18 William P Snyier former state auditor Wim L Matthews former treasurer John W H Sondereon contractor and James M Shumaker former superintendent of grounds were sentenced to pay a $100 fine and two years imprisonment for participation in a conspiracy connected with grafting in the construction of the Pennsylvania state capitol.
State Superintendent J. H. Ackerman lauded the county schools after a series of educational visits ending at Vincent. He praised the condition of country schools, noted keen interest and orderly conduct, and suggested longer terms and better room facilities. Ackerman stays in Pendleton to address the directors convention.
In a spring sequel to a sensational divorce, multimillionaire David Y. Hanbury patches up with his former telephone girl wife. He presents her four million in deeds recorded in Napa, transferring wealth including Hanbury brewing interests in Minnesota, London breweries, champagne wineries in France and Russia, plus stakes in Nevada and Oregon. The husband previously attacked her character during the proceedings.
San Francisco December 18 The state legislature will likely adopt six chaplains replacing two with a Roman Catholic priest a Jewish rabbi Episcopal San Recto and pastors from Methodist Presbyterian and Baptist denominations The change follows last session when Senator Edward Wolf a Jewish member objected to Jesus Christ named in the invocation and could not join the opening devotions

Topeka judge denies writ for R. B. Shepard of Salt Lake City seeking freedom from Leavenworth federal penitentiary. Shepard was sentenced to five years for sending obscene literature through the mails. Appeal indicated.
Charles Abbott, a Hampton merchant, was shot and killed while his brother Bunk Abbott, county treasurer, was wounded yesterday in a dispute over a business deal. Two Black men believed responsible fled as police and others pursue them.

In San Francisco on December 18 the Southern Pacific ferry Newark with several hundred passengers faced destruction as a engine room accident left it at the mercy of a strong ebb tide. Rescue boats reached it in time to avert ashore drift near the Golden Gate on the San Francisco to Oakland run.

Oakland December 18. A man giving the name J P Frenna claiming to be a capitalist was arrested charged with cutting the hand some and expensive gown of Mrs G Proctor who was riding in a street car. Two detectives report seeing the man use the scissors.

A fire at the Extric Heating and Man factory in Alhambra California completely destroyed the plant this morning. Estimated loss runs to about $50,000. Incendiarism is suspected.
