Today’s telegrams show mixed wheat activity. New York prices firm with December at 61,044 and January at 1.05 percent, while February and May lie near 1.074 and 1.114. San Francisco and Liverpool notes indicate buyer interest and dull conditions in California markets.
In the House of Commons Lord Randolph Churchill asks if Emin Pasha and Henry M. Stanley were really captured by Osman Digna and if Britain would suspend hostilities to seek Khartoum. Government replies that operations will not be halted for weeks awaiting fate.
United States secret service officers in St. Paul report a large opium smuggling conspiracy operating across the Northwestern boundary. A wagon with 800 pounds of opium was seized near the Dakota line, driver arrested, and the ring connected to a Denver arrest. The operation could have yielded about 4000 in profit.
A central Illinois line train was attacked one mile north of Duck Hill. Two men boarded the engine forced movement and robbed the express car of three thousand dollars. A passenger was fatally shot as the conductor and guard returned fire. nine shots followed. The slain man, a Hughes, Iowa native, was the sole support of his widowed mother.
Frederick Klehm was found guilty of manslaughter in the three day trial over the stabbing of Oscar Gabriel. The jury rejected a murder theory and relied on Gabriel's statements for proof.
This morning six Narrow Gauge railroad workers boarded a hand car at Avondale Junction and it sped down to Gilbert avenue where a stone on the track hurled them into an embankment. Four men Pheiffer Jan Powers Chas Shelly and T Sullivan were dangerously hurt Pat Dunkell and an unknown man were lightly injured. Authorities suspect the stone was placed on the track on purpose.
In St. Levan on December 1 the U S Circuit Court overruled McGarry v the Missouri Powerhead case. McGarry, master workman of the family, had secured judgment against the company for 1500 dollars for safe imprisonment during the HaS strike. Meanwhile the steamer Lroquodé Law waited at New York for Jacksonville carrying 300 yellow fever refugees returning home.
