In a humorous turn of mind the students of Willamette University stole the corner stone of Matson Hall last night. Ceremonies were postponed while the stone was located, later found buried under a woodshed on the campus in Corneem, Oregon.
Baker City Oregon December 16 Great ecrowha attend today's session of the state irrigation congress marking one of the greatest gatherings of eastern Oregon. The keynote of all speeches is the conservation of Oregon resources especially water power in relation to irrigation.
In Flushing on December 14, Special Prosecutor Elmer White read an openly addressed statement to jurors in the murder trial of Thornton and Jenkins Haines for the killing of William Annis.
In Greenwich Ohio on December 1 four robbers attempted a bank entry. Marshal Wood shot one attacker fatally after refusing to retreat his men. He was then fatally wounded by another robber. The attackers fled as Wood’s body was kicked into the street and pursued by a posse.
Paris December 16 Count De Castellane said he does not want money from his former wife now Princess De Sama. He seeks only custody of the children to bring them up in a simple home. He says the children should be separated from their mother and her new husband because they believe money is everything and honor is nothing.
Washington D C Dec 16 A committee of congress to draw up bills for government funded waterway improvements was appointed. Members include Representative Moore of Pennsylvania J N Teal of Portland Ore Albert Bettinger of Obie and Representative Cherley of Kentucky.
Deaiver Cal Dee 1h Fred Buser, Los Angeles athlete, was driving home with bride Ethel Alberton when strangers hurled obscenities at Mes Rucer. Buser intervened, ejecting the assailants from the car and guiding the girl home. The couple married a week later.
Pendleton officials meet to debate city finances and library support as liquor license revenue drops from 1400 to 24000 and a plan to sustain the town library is sought. Council members discuss possible near term solutions to keep library services running amid changed conditions.
Salem, Dec 16. H B Miller general freight agent for the Harriman lines asks the railroad commission to approve a refund over 360 to Portland Manufacturing Co of Albina and shipments of balml wood from Gains Shedurne and Bussard to Portland. Miller says the rate charged was the general lumber rate and a more reasonable rate under a different heading should apply.
Washington reports a new counterfeit silver certificate featuring the Indian head, detected by the secret service. It deceives by using genuine paper bleached from a similar denomination, with color removed from some fibers yet still visible. The back also misleads, aided by blue green ink details.
Washington December 16 Senator Lodge of Massachusetts urged against Senator Foraker’s plan to compel the president to allow discharged soldiers to reenlist. He argued the Foraker bill would bind the president by conditions and threaten command. the president currently holds the authority to discharge and Congress cannot rescind it. The Browneville affair and related protections to the war department were discussed with no further debate.
Senator Aldrich of Ithade Island introduced a Senate resolution demanding hearings on President Roosevelt's use of the secret service. The measure, adopted by the Senate, targets a full investigation of the Secret Service and its maintenance appropriations. The action stems from a dispute over congressional access to the agency.
In Valtejo California a dispute arose between coroner Dr J B Klote and Dr Z C Hogan of the state health belt over who could perform the post mortem on Mrs Avuet Rose, the Prometheus luncheon poisoning victim. Klote refused Hogan access but won the right to conduct the autopsy, with the stomach sample sent to San Francisco for testing.

They plan a drive this week to cover shortfalls, with Mrs J Smith urging city support for maintenance and librarian costs while Judge Fee allocates interest from the Sturgis fund for books.
