Priests Stir Massacre as Riots Roil Regions

Turiek and Elizabethgrad report mobs burning estates and plundering while troops refuse to fire. Priests incited the massacre and preached sermons to promote it. Plainclothes police enter homes of Jews to slaughter inmates as bands gather in Vakrum and surrounding areas. Government plans to curb strikes move slowly. telegraph lines remain severed across the empire.

Survey Finds Favorable Moscow Palouse Rail Route

A Spokane based pair of surveyors report a promising rail line from Palouse to Moscow via Viola. The route, about ten miles shorter than the current wagon road, would cross an agricultural region with limited railroad access and could spur freight and passenger traffic. H T Robertson notes the northwest entry by the ball park and expects construction to begin soon. The Journal had predicted electric cars into Moscow by year end 1906.

Wallowa Dredge Goes Into Winter Quarters At Lewiston

The U S dredge boat Wallowa was placed in winter quarters at Lewiston dock yesterday and will not exit until a four foot stage of water returns, likely around March. The Norma carried 1200 sacks of grain from Riparia to Asotin with no difficulties reported, while the river nine inch stage is noted prior to Norma’s trip.

Dredge Work Improves Upper River Channel

The dredge recently worked on lead placements along the upper river and gently improved the channel. When it returns it will dig a new channel near Of field's bar and will include Pine Tree, Log Cabin, Deadman. Tow stages will resume dyke work and rock blasting at the Wallowa after reaching Kiparin area.

John Henkle of Vale now employed by a railroad surveying a Vale to Ontario line visits the city on business. Locals expect work to begin spring with large crews and full operation within a year.

Roosevelt announces engagement of Alice Roosevelt to Longworth

Washington December 14 President and Mrs Roosevelt formally announce the engagement of their daughter Alice Lee Roosevelt to Nicholas Longworth representative from Ohio. The wedding will be at the White House mid February. Longworth is overwhelmed with congratulations and plans for a brief wedding trip. Cincinnati will be their home. Streets improvements are planned in spring with about 6000 spent from a three mill tax. The road roller will have a busy summer.

Sale Enforcement Notice for Portland Real Estate

George Durreau through MuCourt & Phelps filed in the elecutt court to secure a $9000 real estate sale in Portland. The property is owned jointly by Durreau, Bridgett Pigeon and others. Martin Brouse, who owed 22, was found dead in a Front Street lodging hall with gas on amid possible accidental cause. He was described as intemperate and unemployed.

Electric system in Chin area knocked out by frost and fog

Heavy frost and fog caused many telephone lines to break and cut communications in Chin. The N W G J line to a residence failed in the forenoon, and Preston Parton mill shut down due to no power. Repairs began in the afternoon as crews worked to restore service.

Yakima Indian Arrest For Liquor On Reservation

Ta-ta-dee-an, a Yakima Indian, is arrested for liquor on the reservation. He was taken into custody by Indian police, with Major Edwards swearing out a complaint before Commissioner John Hailey Jr. The suspect claimed liquor was acquired at Jim Barnhart’s home, where four other Indians were present.
