Rebel forces shell Tampico from hills outside the city as federal gunboat Bravo joins the assault amid reports of heavy casualties and burning buildings. Foreign refugees surge toward foreign ships with 650 aboard and 500 remaining in the neutral zone as Tampico’s defense clings to the embankment line.
The Milton Fruitgrowers' Union annual dinner in Milton, Oregon drew a large attendance with A. F. Hammett chairing. Invitations issued stood at about four hundred with many accepted. representatives from Walla Walla, Pendleton, and others attended. N. W. Durham was absent due to a sick family, replaced by H. C. Simpson. Musical numbers were performed by local quartets and choirs. the union and association will meet again in January.
Wil ferd Unger, indicted by a recent grand jury and awaiting trial on new support charged by his former wife, was released from alimony obligations by a Mc Minnville jury. The verdict found him not able bodied and thus not bound by the prior decree.

The plan would not provide food, and he seeks funds for meals while possibly adding road work. He hopes to spare a cheerless Christmas and improve the winter situation.
Sister Mary Electra of St Anthony's hospital died yesterday around noon after a lingering illness. Born Miss Mary Kavanaugh she was 45. Transferred five years ago from the Mother House in Philadelphia she lived under the Sister of Charity. Funeral from St Mary Church on Saturday morning at 9 o'clock.

Washington December 13 Secretary Garrison announced that on April 22 Major General Leonard Wood would cease to be chief of staff of the United States Army. Miss Mary Ryan of Detroit who had been reported missing in Cleveland was found at the home of friends in Detroit. She had been in the city since Monday and explained she left Cleveland due to a dispute with her brother over property.

In Portland Oregon a suspected double murder and suicide occurred at the Birnie home. Mrs Mary Birnie her niece Miss Agnes Ravineau of Vancouver and Mrs Birnies son Frank Simmons were found shot to death. Authorities believe Simmons killed the women then shot himself. The bodies were discovered by Mrs Birnies young daughter returning from school.
In Montreal Quebec on December 12 daylight reached Mount Royal as two labor gangs tunneling 600 feet met inside the mountain. The completed tunnel runs three and one third miles for the Canadian Northern Railway and trains are expected to run through within a year.

Salem Oregon December 12 State Printer Harris signed a contract called the label agreement with the allied printing trades council of Salem. The agreement requires the state printer to hire only members of the typographical pressmen and assistants unions and to pay the union wage scale.
Outpost skirmishing is reported at Ojinaga where the federal garrison from Chihuahua City took refuge after its fight at the border. A battle is expected before Sunday as federals face likely death or surrender to rebels, who may kill many officers or cross the border to surrender to American authorities.
KANSAS CITY December 12 John Alkens president of the Missouri and Kansas Calf and Cattle company charged with obtaining money by trick in connection with an alleged corner of the local calf market was found guilty and sentenced to two years in the penitentiary Orland and Bone chief buyer of the company was acquitted of the same charge
About 1000 rabbits were killed in a Holdman area drive organized by farmers with Pendleton participation. More than 250 volunteers formed a two mile semicircle, driving rabbits toward a corral and clubbing them as they were penned. Officials counted 725 on site, but totals including carried away and late deaths exceed 1000. A next drive is planned from Hermiston and Stanfield.
Glenn Martin arrived at 10 32 this morning in his biplane after flying 33 miles from Los Angeles in 32 minutes.
Washington December 12 reliable sources say Colonel Goethals wants to run the Panama canal for six months and then head the zone’s permanent government. He has filed his views with the secretary of war and a discussion with the president is planned. Reports also say Goethals may be sent to Alaska to supervise a government owned railroad and its construction.
In Chihuahua City Mexican rebel forces seized Luis Terrazas son of a wealthy financier at the British consulate. The British vice consul seeks an official explanation of the intrusion and Terrazas’s return, while awaiting ransom from his father.
T B Coyle was named superintendent of the Pasco division of the Northern Pacific. He visited Pasco for his first official stop since assuming duties, succeeding J L DeForce who moves to Spokane to head the Idaho division. Accompanying him were James Shannon train master D McLaughlin general road master and P E Anderson assistant roadmaster. Coyle is an old associate of Walter Adama local NP agent and they formerly worked together as operators on the sound.
Eleven university coeds in Eugene Oregon launched a stamp drive in the business district selling Red Cross seals. In a few hours they disposed of 9520 stamps and expect several hundred dollars from the drive running through Christmas. The workers named were Lucile Fenton Ann Topplar Rosa Price Florence Kendall Mabel Smith Bess Cushman Ethel Toon Ina Cochran Marjory Cogrywell Olive Risley and Leone Williams.
In Los Angeles on December 12 the government won a $75,000 conviction against Dr John Grant Lyman, promoter of Panama land schemes, for using mail to defraud. The jury found him guilty on one count while acquitting him on five others after deliberating 24 hours with witnesses brought from around the world.
