Swiss Forestry Policy a Century and Half of Progress

Swiss forest policy dates back 600 years with the Bern forest ordinance. The Sthl wald of Zurich is under a working plan since 16490. The American consul cites strict regulation to prevent excess cutting, reduce avalanches, and protect soil, roads, and water. Forest area totals 2,206,508 acres with most under protection. Private forests forbid close cutting without federal consent and reforestation guarantees. Roads are built by cantons. 1908 saw $46,634 spent by the state on cantonal roadwork. Spruce dominates, followed by white fir, beech, and pine. Major revenue comes from lumber, with 1908 plantings of over 25 million trees. State forests in St Gall yielded $24,457 with $7,104 expenses. Winterthur forests earned $51,174 with $21,044 costs, netting about $10.42 per acre. Experts say profits from well-managed forests support national and cantonal treasuries.
