United States Steel Corporation will construct its own furnaces after a Braddock project at the Edgar Thomson plant near Pittsburgh. The J furnace is to be blown in tomorrow, a move prompted by delays from outside contractors, signaling a shift to in house furnace production for the company.
In Chicago on December 4, Captain George Streeter, William MacMannes and Henry Hoshidake were found guilty of manslaughter for killing John Kirk, a watchman employed by opponents of Streeters land claim. An indeterminate sentence awaits the convicted men.

A fire at the Lincoln hotel in downtown Chicago claimed fourteen lives and injured many, spread quickly between the second and fourth floors. The blaze began by a gas jet, trapping guests including farmers attending the livestock show. Night Watchman Weber is jailed, after investigators say he slept through the alarm as guests scrambled in cold, narrow hallways.
Two more bodies were recovered today from the Progresso wreck. Charles Glenn and Howard Dowe, seamen, were blown overboard from the deck and their eyes were blown out. The bodies were horribly mangled and burned.
William Henderson alias Jack Frazer of Montreal, a society man and athlete, arrested for complicity in Policeman Robinsons murder, was taken to an emergency hospital for insanity examination after turning violent and providing state evidence that convicted Woods of firing the fatal shot. Columbus delegates begin Ohio Congress of Mothers to promote better parenthood and home life with Dr Starr Cadwalader Dr Washington Gladden and Ohio State University President among participants.
San Francisco December 4 William A Botkin was awarded a divorce from Cor delia Botkin after her conviction for poisoning Mrs John H Dunning. The court held desertion as the grounds for the separation.
Andrew Matty and John Strenix testified at the anthracite hearing in Scranton about low wages and harsh company rules. Matty said pay ranged from 10 to 20 dollars weekly with long hours and suspensions for leaving the mine. Strenix described debt-like salaries, sending his children to charity, and periods of mining so little coal it failed to cover powder and oil costs.
Ex speaker Thomas B Reed remains in critical condition in Washington with kidney disease and possible shock risk. Doctors Gardner and MacDonald hope to avoid surgery while kidney failure and dementia are noted as serious concerns. New York Dec 4 announcement states the merger of leading lead producers is complete. The National Lead Company becomes the operating entity with a capital of 60 million dollars and will dominate all lead production in the United States.
Pasco Dec 4 Ovecar Bradshaw a brakeman was found guilty of murder in the first degree for killing Peter Nelson. Kellett Bradshaw's partner faces trial immediately with proceedings set to continue.
The Silverton arrived in San Francisco from London and will start laying the Hawaiian cable on December 1. From the Columbia River exports to foreign ports between July 1, 1903, and June 20, 1902 totaled 45 11 187 feet of lumber. piling moldings and lath not included.
