Elwood Chenoweth the elusive preacher famed for neat appearance and no visible means of support is seen in Pilot Rock lecturing on his odd religious ideas. Locals note he arrives quietly in the forenoon, stays an hour or two, then vanishes as if swallowed by the earth. His origin and destinations remain mysteries while friends allegedly fund his upkeep without identification. Separately reports mention Clark & Pepper claims and river ownership affecting regional plans, with a shift toward preliminary work next year. Ground to be claimed along North Fork John Day
A large company controls ten miles of riverfront north of the North Fork John Day with Eastern interests seeking more land. Work on the Oriental mines continues as surveyors finish a ditch six plus miles long, estimated at 7000 dollars per mile. The firm plans a four mile sawmill at the ditch head and potentially the entire distance, requiring over 1,000,000 feet of lumber. They have purchased Klelasorg property near the river exit to the ditch.
