Deadly Portland streetcar crash claims Rooney at Third and Malin
On August 29 in Portland Fred J Rooney a Spanish American War veteran was struck by Street Car No 269 on the Third street line as he attempted to cross near Third and Malin streets. He died at St. Vincent's hospital at 4 18 am. Witnesses blamed the car's speed while Rooney shared responsibility for crossing. Four Boys Die As Sandbank Caves In At Meredith
Aug 29 in Meredith New Hampshire five boys laying out a tennis court near a summer camp were buried when a sandbank caved in. Four died and one survived. Victims include 16 year olds Patchel Cleghorn of Montreal and Robert Williams of Boston. Daniel Donati of Newton Mass was injured but is expected to recover. The bodies were recovered within two hours by nearby companions.

Fire damages Firat First Methodist church in Walla Walla
Fire yesterday evening badly damaged the north side of the First Methodist church building, destroying the roof and menacing the interior. Loss estimated near 6000 with 8000 policy. Origin unknown though stored items in the north annex, including Christmas trimmings and books, are suspected. The church, built near Second and Poplar, is among Walla Walla’s oldest houses of worship.

Conductor O Connell Mangled In Caboose Accident
Conductor J F O Connell of the O R N freight division was caught by a moving caboose in La Grande while guiding a sheep shipment. Long Termers Escape Prison In Joliet Hospital
