He will call a friend to preside, speak long, and deliver severe chastisement of Republicans labeled as malcontents. He pledges blunt language and virile rhetoric to reveal alleged hypocrisy.
Mackinac Island Mich Aug 24 Cannon Synere questions Fowler reason for attack on "Cannonism" and says he read Fowler's open letter in full. He urges readers to be patient and asserts his patience as speaker led to not naming Fowler as committee chairman on banking and finance. He would accept judgment from colleagues if he refused to appoint Fowler.
In Bluffs Cal Aug 4 John Melintosh was beaten to death in the city jail and Jerry Desmond injured with a fractured skull likely to die. John Lowery alias John Sullivan held awaiting coroner inquest as jailer recalls cries of murder.
Portland August 24. Under the traffic agreement between the Spokane Portland and Seattle railway and the North Pacific Steamship Company the Elder and Roanoke through passenger service into California will be inaugurated on September 28. The plan provides through passenger service linking Spokane, Portland and Seattle with West Coast routes.
Police charge Emma Goldman with responsibility for Sunday night's riot at the McKee’s Rock plant of the Pressed Steel Car company. She reportedly spoke urging strikers to burn the plant. authorities seek her removal from the city.

Col. J. H. Raley and guests in a touring car chased a large black bear on the old stage road three miles west of Meacham Sunday evening. The bear sprinted about 100 yards ahead of the auto before turning away, leaving the party impressed by the bear’s speed and looks though Col. Raley admits he could not tell what he would have done if he had caught it. The tale reads with a Baron Munchaudsen flair as the colonel describes the thrilling pursuit.
W Bollows, division superintendent for the Oregon, Washington and Northern company, announces abolition of division official titles such as division engineer and chief dispatcher. Seven general superintendents will lead the Oregon division, with new naming and simplified correspondence rules to speed business and reduce personnel.
In Portland James J. Hill won a major court ruling foiling E. H. Harriman over the Deschutes canyon right of way. Justice Robert S. Bean enjoined Harriman interests from occupancy, granting Hill a year’s head start. Attorney Cotton expressed surprise and planned an injunction to force the Harriman group to use only a 200 foot strip.

Aug 24 Tenos Ayres reports two hundred fifty excursionists drowned when a German steamer rammed by the Colombia at Montevideo harbor. A picnic aboard both vessels led to mass panic as lifeboats failed. The German captain survived and attempted suicide.

Glenn Curtiss, United States aviator, and M. Paulham of France shared honors on the second day of aviation week at Rheims. Curtiss set a speed record for the 6 1 6 mile course in 5 minutes 34 2 5 seconds during a late flight, while Paulham achieved two high altitude runs of 49 1 2 and 56 kilometres. The crowd watched as Curtiss nearly touched the ground during a sharp finish but recovered, declaring the key moment a record. Rivals lay scattered on the course as the event ended.
Omaha reports a murder case over Captain John Raymond killed June 13 possibly by Corporal Lisle Crabtree or by a stray bullet in a struggle with Sergeant Washburn.
