Water users with unpaid bills are urged to contact the city water office before week’s end to avoid service denial. J E Thom, cashier, notes bills due by the tenth each month and warns of no grace period. Ream adds water scarcity makes free supply impractical and restoration charges of one dollar apply.
Eight hundred iron workers strike in Honolulu demanding reinstatement of discharged union men. All iron works in the city are idle. The situation appears deadlocked. This is the first big strike in the islands and the second of any kind in Hawaii’s history.
In Miles City Montana August 21 rancher C Palmer dumped a crate of 24 spring chickens weighing about a pound and a half each into the Yellowstone River after being offered 16 cents a pound. In Washington, President Wilson said he had no power over the treaty before Senate ratification and rejected calls to cede territory. Administration leaders in Congress push for ratification without reservations, while opponents insist on amendments.
A field day plan titled A Field Day for the people and by the people was outlined for the 11th Field Day at Hermiston Experiment Station. Committees from the Hermiston Commercial Club, led by Tom Frasier EK Kingsley and W W Idey, will select farmer and community members to join with Fred Bennion and county agent Miss Elia May Harmon to finalize a program including a picnic lunch talks by Dean Cordley and Professor Powers, and demonstrations of a pressure cooker iceless refrigerator and fireless cooker.
In St Louis on August 21 the hell phone ban prompts Belleville housewives to find no meat orders by telephone. The butchers union voted to not answer bell phones in their shops to aid striking operators and linemen. The Retail Clerks union backed a strike if employers keep hell phones but agreed to answer Bell phones at their workplaces.
Local councilmen pressed Pendleton officials on wages and revenue for telephones. Superintendent Murray refused to disclose local office data, citing Portland records. Linemen were said to gain a $1.15 daily increase, with the committee noting data appeared prepared elsewhere. The report was adopted and sent to the Public Service Commission for a Portland hearing on Airport 27 rates.
Pendleton's American Legion of In Heiliation held its second meeting last evening in the rooms of the Commercial Association and selected the name Pendleton Post. The post was organized by adopting by laws patterned after Portland and other posts. A small attendance led to postponing business until September, with meetings likely on Monday nights instead of Wednesdays.
Seven hundred union dyers and cleaners struck in Chicago on August 21, closing shops and throwing about two thousand workers out of work. Dyers demand 450 a week and cleaners 40. Both sides seek a closed shop.

Additional fires in Elein and Moroville regions threaten forest land. crews are working from Pendleton and nearby towns. In Montana and San Diego reports, rangers are departing to assist with fire suppression and beer licensing ordinance plans loom in San Diego.

Dr Lewis Haney of the Southern Wholesale Grocers Associations testifies before the senate agricultural committee that packers via refrigerator car ownership control not only meat shipments but groceries canned goods and other commodities in the southwest. He says packers hid price increases to secure control and notes they seek substitutes for various articles. Chicago Aug 21. Show houses near reopening as actors strike tightens theaters. Washington Aug 21. Senator Fernald defends big packers arguing against regulation of large industries and urging fair play for individual enterprises. He contends packers are efficient and should not be singled out. if licensed, business should be similar.
Washington Aug 21 extension of the federal food control act to include wearing apparel and to empower the justice department to act against profiteering retailers was approved by the House agricultural committee.
In Brussels a figure called Raber writes to the prime minister proposing actions to arrest rising prices for essentials. He suggests home food production, equal import distribution, regimentation of wheat sugar milk and butter, price controls for coal clothing and shoes, and international talks to fix staple prices and extend credits to devastated countries.
The band faces a possible deadlock as the Commercial Association debates turning over $987 to the band’s secretary. Chairman R. Chiopek and Karl Sawyer report funds are needed for the performers who say they will play once the money is in hand. Probabilities of a concert look better than even money.

Crowds greater than ever predicted for the Pendleton Round-Up as S ransom, secretary of the Pendleton Commercial Association, reports rising inquiries for tickets and reservations. The Dufo Valley Development League plans to send four members for three days with requests for four grandstand seats and reservations for September 18 19 and 20.
