Open River plan to ship inland wheat by river barge
The Open River Transportation company will trial a wheat barge on the upper Columbia from Celilo to Portland, aiming to cut freight costs for Inland Empire farmers. A 269 ton capacity barge, 90 feet by 10 feet, will be built at Celilo and towed between Pasco or Kennewick and Celtic, with cargoes of 40 tons of wheat per trip. If successful, multiple barges and independent rail lines may follow, lowering costs for eastern Washington and Oregon producers.
