La Grande Aug 16 three youths from prominent families were arrested for attempting to wreck a train by piling ties on the O KR N line near Hilgard. J N Young 17, George Ackles 16, and C G Sturtz 16 were halted by the section foreman at Sige Spur while placing a large stack of ties. A freight train stopped in time, no damage. Hearing set for this evening.
Indiana deputy marshal Ja Proebatel reports the arrest of known character Butch Curry on a whiskey selling charge. The incident occurred inland this morning as authorities pursued the case.
Chicago reports show Mayor Harrison pressing to mediate between Retail Growers, Meat Packers, and union leaders as the strike grinds on. Funds are raised, arrests rise, and a mob injures a policeman in Sheeley suburb while Donnelly and Libby officials face summons.
The Oregon Railroad and Navigation Company sues Umatilla County seeking a writ of review in a condemnation suit. Briefs will be filed before State Circuit Judge W. R. He posted $25 cash bail earlier and fled, later having bail forfeited. he previously worked for the Washington and Oregon Power Company and was en route to Walla Walla when captured.
In recent days East Oregonian reports substantial sheep purchases for Nebraska feeders. Garrison & Reynolds of Kearney bought 18,000 head, Munter & Stephen bought 200 in Wallowa county, and 12,000 will ship about September 1. Ewes vary in value as buyers determine worth per animal, while mixed lots of feeders, lambs, ewes, and yearlings were acquired by Ed Campbell and A. B. Seppe totaling several thousand head.
Jato Cavin was arrested in Pendleton for allegedly stealing 14 dollars from C M Pardue. He befriended Pardue at a lodging house after claiming he had no food, stayed overnight, and woke to find the money missing. Cavin is jailed and to be arraigned in the state circuit court on larceny charges.
Avigusta Georgia Aug 16 report states fifteen Negroes accused of killing the Hodges family three weeks ago were lynched at 4 am after a mob cut wires. The Hodges clan of seven perished, including a one year old babe, with an axe brutality described. Local troops rushed to Statesboro with reports of further executions.
Seven inmates confined in the county jail escaped last night by cutting a brick wall to reach the staircase, then exiting through a window into the alley. The incident occurred in Portland on August 15.
The Trades Council formalizes a Labor Day observance by appointing a Haven committee to canvass funding. Ed Hben B Bean and George Ferguson lead Clerks' Union, with unions from Carpenters Painters Flumbers Walon Bartenders represented.
