Last Survivor of the Auburn Gold Discoverers Remains In City
The 1861-62 Baker County gold party led by Henry Griffin and including David Littlefield produced Griffin’s Gulch in eastern Oregon. Littlefield, born in Prospect Maine, now aged and widowed veteran, recalls the trek from Oregon’s interior to Auburn and Canyon City. The group formed the first mining district, laid out claims, and helped spark a regional rush that formed Auburn, Canyon City and surrounding camps. Littlefield is believed the last survivor of the Griffin’s Gulch party.
