A broad market decline hits Reading Railway shares hardest with nearly five dollars lost, as Union Pacific and Atchison drop about three fifty each. Copper and Northern lines suffer, London and Chicago markets weaken, telegraphers strike disrupts trading and panic spreads through Wall Street.
The American Apple Growers Congress began its fifth annual meeting in St Louis with headquarters at the Southern hotel. Henry M. Dunlap of Savoy Illinois was named president and T. Co. Wilson of Hannibal Missouri secretary. Topics include San Jose scale control, local organization advantages, transportation problems, protecting orchards from spring frosts, spraying for partial or total crop failures, bulk shipments benefits, and air frozen markets.
G W Keen near McMinnville Oregon reports the heaviest fleece from a single sheep. A yearling yielded 28 pounds while a two year old produced 22 pounds. Keen sold the clip at 24.5 cents per pound, totaling 11 dollars and 26 cents for the two fleeces.
J F Miller superintendent of Trail refinery and Noble attempted to shoot the Miles Rapids on the Kootenal river from Slocan to Trail. They used a canvas boat with air cushions but no pumps. The boat capsized in rough water near the Columbia junction, Noble disappeared and is believed to have struck a submerged rock. Miller reached shore aboard and waited. Noble’s body not recovered, may drift toward Washington.
Farmers near Palouse avoid storage and handling charge hikes tied to Inland empire warehousemen. Local buyers met and kept receipts and insurance terms unchanged from last season. Despite prior farmer dissatisfaction, the group decided no new costs, and no grain will be held on farms.
Federal Judge J A Riner overruled a motion for a new trial in the conspiracy to defraud the government case involving BE FE Lonebaugh and Robert McPhilamey over coal land acquisitions at Monarch Wyoming. Holbrook and Lonebaugh fined 10000 each, McPhilamey 2000. One third of the party’s share to be paid as costs, with commitment to county jail until adjustments are satisfied. Appeals planned to the circuit court of appeals.
Harvest resumes across Umatilla county as recent rains caused light damage to wheat. Prices range 60 to 71 cents, with over 200,000 bushels sold in Athena to Preston Parton Milling at 69 to 71 cents. Anson Woods sells 6000 bushels at 70 cents, while buyers include Independent and Pacific Coast Heater companies.
Western Union and Associated Press telegraph operators in Portland Tacoma Spokane Seattle and other cities walked out in a widespread strike on August 12. Railroads refused non railroad messages, isolating Walla Walla and cutting off rapid national telegram service. The action followed wage demands and union decisions, with San Francisco and other hubs reporting sustained outages and legal/board responses.
J G Cutler announces the Northern Pacific will soon run a regular passenger train on the W and C R line to Pendleton. Start date not set. service hinges on equipment. Train will begin with two coaches and connect with mainline NP trains. Freight will run separately once the passenger schedule starts.
President Bleakney tours Union Baker Wallowa counties promoting Pendleton academy. He cites strong enrollment from multiple Oregon counties, bumper hay and wheat crops, fruit prosperity, improving real estate, and a new railroad boost to Wallowa. Campers flock to the lake once known as Lake Joseph.
Prof B E Wieck of Valparaiso Indiana is chosen to head the Pendleton high school business course for the coming year after 15 to 20 applicants. No principal selected yet to replace Prof Harrison. Public schools set to reopen Monday September 9 with extensive painting and repairs underway.
About 40 Greek and Austrian laborers on the Wigdom of the Amatiie project walked out recently causing scarce help while work continues at a brisk pace with the remainder advancing toward completion. In a few days the crew will be complete again.
B R Cook, a Ka mela wood contractor, tried to take carbolic acid in La Grande on August 13. The attempt caused him severe pain but failed. He was brought to a hospital after the incident. He is well known locally. Reported motive cites months of suffering from spinal curvature and a desire to die.
