Gallagher told newspaper men in Jersey City he intended to kill Gaynor but now hopes for Gaynor’s recovery. He cites Shakespeare and Dickens, claims Henry George inspired his views, and says he is a Hearst follower who shifted from Tammany Hall to Hearst after seeking justice. He refuses to justify his act, seeks punishment, and defends Hearst’s truth.

Denver August 11 State Senator Irby condemned the treatment of Mayor Gaynor by Hearst papers. He said daily yellow journalism hunted him and that the attempted assassination was a logical consequence of the injustice.
Washington August 11 General Wood chief of staff ordered a battalion of the fourteenth Infantry to move from American Lake to the Coeur dAlenes to combat fires already beyond control.

London experts examining the basement body at Dr Crippen's home say it is that of a woman who had undergone an operation before death. The finding supports a rumor from Quebec that Crippen told Canadian officials his wife died after an operation performed by him. No identity established.
Baltimore Aug 11 The funeral of Joe Gans will be held Sunday and will be one of the most impressive services for a colored man in Baltimore. The body will be interred at Sharp Street Cemetery.
Dig Hog Ranch in Amarillo Texas reports plans to create ten thousand acres devoted entirely to hog culture with the Texas Panhandle poised to host the world’s largest hog operation.

Some 40,000 acres are reported burned. Pack animals ferry provisions to the front. fires are blamed on government surveyors, one smoking a cigarette and discarding a lit match.
In San Francisco on Aug 11 Patrick Calhoun A A Moore Stanley Moore and John Barrett were committed for contempt of court and placed in a jail cell used by guards. They are served lavish hampers from a first class hotel and though not registered, the jail feels like a hotel to them.
Cheyenne Wyoming August 11 Army officers scour the country around Pole mountains for robbers who stole the paymaster s safe from maneuver camp at Pole mountain containing 6500 The paymaster s tent was heavily guarded and officers are at a loss to account for the daring theft.
After 19 years at O A C as a faculty member and station councilman, Prof. B F Pernot resigns to run a Portland bacteriological laboratory. He opens in the Medical building with Glen DeHaven as assistant, bringing his careful scientific work to the new venture.
