People's Lobby Idea Gaining Momentum in Washington
A Washington movement seeks a national people’s lobby to monitor legislation and disclose lawmakers’ records. Proponents say publicity, an office, a nine member committee, and paid manager would inform the public which bills gain support and which are killed in committees, resisting dirty lobbying. Roosevelt and White House interest are noted, with Chicago’s Municipal Voters League cited as a model. Correspondence to the White House is encouraged.

Mile Object Lesson Road At Salem State Fair
State experts work on the mile object lesson road near the fair grounds to illustrate macadam construction steps. Yesterday 176 cubic feet of rock were laid and 1150 feet treated with first layer rock. Three layers of rock will be laid before binding, then a ten ton roller compacts the surface to a hole-free highway. A stray note mentions the Queen of Spain being baptized three times in various churches.

Southern Pacific Builds Drain-Marshfield Road Extension
The Southern Pacific plans a 50 thousand barrel cement contract for 10 miles of grade on the Drain Marshfield road. Cement from Antwerp and European ports will be shipped to Portland and then to Drain by rail, with 36,000 barrels by water to Dean's Creek on the Umpqua river. A steam schooner under 10 feet draft will be sought to reach the Umpqua mouth, and roughly 7,500 tons of material will require about eight trips. Chief Engineer Hood in San Francisco is canvassing bids for the initial 40 miles, with winter weather threatening delays.
