A strongly urged move to repeal a Sunday closing law dominated a city council meeting. Businessmen pressed for immediate repeal, claiming the ordinance harms trade. the mayor and City Attorney debated, and the session adjourned to Friday at 4 p m for further action. Several speakers urged repeal citing hardship on merchants and customers.
St Paul Aug 10 Governor John fon requested arbitration on the telegraph strike. J J Hill wired a firm refusal today. Train conditions are improving daily with resumed movement and fewer delays.
In Chicago on August 10 rioting resumed as union men attacked five nonunion drivers from Montgomery Ward & Co. Deputies escorting them were routed. Two beaten drivers fired shots. police searched the area but found no rioters. Names Simon Nock and Jerry Williams reported badly bruised, others lightly injured.
Milwaukee August 10 Mayor Rove defends Cheris Pfister amid a 14000 graft indictment alleging a political ends conspiracy. Pfister calls the indictment the greatest outrage. In Wilkes-Barre thousands welcome President Roosevelt and Catholic Total Abstinence Union delegates including Cardinal Gibbons and John Mitchell as the parade winds through town.
Aug 16 report from Cleveland cites Dr. Blegar stating President Harper’s condition has improved and Rockefeller’s physician says another operation is unnecessary. Harper and Rockefeller decline to be seen.
A Portmouth dispatch reports proposed terms to end hostilities with Japan include cession of Amur province areas, Saghalin, and Liaoning points, plus renunciation of interference with fortifications and open door policy. J C Staubba Harriman system traffic chief tours Oregon Washington with Walla Walla officials on a three car special train. George Leroy, jailed in King County, admits he conspired with two others to kill blonde Jonnie Cramer in Stratford, Connecticut, sixteen years earlier for $3600. Tommie Gardner reportedly committed the actual murder, while Leroy and Ad Jackmans acted as spotters paid $200 each by the victim's ex-lover, who sought money from the girl.
