Cherokee Canadian lieutenant Long Lance in European action
Lieutenant Long Lance, a full blood Cherokee and graduate of Curlalo University, served in the Prince's crack regiment on the western front. He survived the April Vimy Ridge engagement as the battalion's only remaining officer of his rank, and near the quiet day that followed he was wounded in the back of the head by shrapnel, breaking his nose, writing home from a French hospital. The photo shows him in tribal dress before enlisting with the Canadian forces.
