Arthur Gulliford and Bert Lowe were lowered from a haystack when a hay net broke, dropping them about 20 feet. Gulliford suffered fractures to both arms and other injuries, Lowe sustained multiple bruises. They were taken to Pendleton by motor car after the accident on the Gulliford ranch near Echo.
Washington Aug 8 Joseph Forney Johnston Democrat senator from Alabama died of pneumonia. Born in North Carolina he was seventy. Elected to the Senate in 1907 to succeed Pettus. Johnston served in the Confederate army rising from private to captain. He was governor of Alabama elected in 1896 and re-elected in 1898.
Washington August 8 The California congressional delegation led by Senator Works congratulates Senator Perkins on his milestone of twenty years in the United States Senate. The delegation notes his long service and contributions to the state and nation.
The water commission considers using chloride of lime to purify all water entering mains to prevent typhoid. Dr J A Best may visit North Yakima to study the method, prompted by Pacific Power & Light Co and Navy experts. The practice, used successfully in Washington DC, reduces death rates and costs little, though river water contamination rises in summer.
Johnny Bryant, famed aviator who carried East Oregonians to Athena with Alys McKee, died in Victoria B C while giving an exhibition. Kennewick Washington August report states W J Green of Spokane has awarded contracts for a $50,000 river steamboat and a $10,000 Kennewick Pasco ferry. The Pasco Kennewick Railway and Navigation Co. will be headed by Green as president and GM with Pasco offices. Local belief ties the project to Northern Pacific through a traffic agreement. Green was accompanied by C R Lonergan, NP general agent at Spokane.
OTTAMA Iowa August 8 Judge Hunter of the state district court ruled that the Webb Kenyon law prohibiting liquor shipments from wet to dry states is unconstitutional because it delegates to the state authority to regulate state commerce which belongs to Congress alone. Express companies had brought the action after being barred from shipping liquor into dry counties in Iowa from Illinois and Missouri.
About 70 million feet of Douglas fir cedar and hemlock and 286 thousand feet of cedar poles in Olympia National Forest Washington are offered to highest bidder. Bids must exceed set minimums of 1.65 to 2.50 per unit with five years to cut and remove. Chief forester may readjust stumpage charges in 1916 based on lumber prices.
