Roosevelt speaks tomorrow as a large delegation attends the opening of the Progressive convention in Chicago. Two keynote addresses are planned with Albert Beveridge and possibly Theodore Roosevelt, who will address the gathering tomorrow. The platform supports initiative recall direct primaries and tariff reform.
Constantinople August 6. The sultan ordered the parliament to dissolve as troops surrounded the buildings to enforce obedience. The chamber adjourned sine die, signaling the virtual end of the Young Turks' rule. In Rome it was believed the overthrow could hasten peace between Turkey and Italy.
Kiel Aug. 6 five Englishmen arrived from Copenhagen were arrested on suspicion of spying on German coastal fortifications at Kiel and Eckernfoerde and await trial. A German sergeant corporal and private were also arrested for furnishing military information to England and France. Many a man is friendless because he's too popular with himself.
John W. Herron father of Mrs Taft died today in Cincinnati of pneumonia at age 45. The death was sudden and Mrs Taft was unable to reach his bedside.
A large crowd greeted Colonel Roosevelt at Union Station in Chicago as he arrived for the Bull Moose convention. He refused to discuss politics, then rode to the Congress Hotel amid cheering and a festive reception. He spoke of party formation and reform while critics called for integrity in finance and media.
A mass meeting is scheduled for August 18 to launch a drive to buy the vacant land north of the Main street bridge and erect a monument for Indian Civil and Spanish war veterans. Major Lee Moorhouse chairs the campaign, aiming to raise funds via $1 subscriptions to construct a large concrete square with a possible fountain.

Washington Aug. 5 Acting on the judiciary sub committee report President Taft formally accepted the resignation of Judge Hanford. Hanford had sent his resignation as the panel investigated charges that could have led to impeachment. Sub-committee members said the charges were virtually substantiated and the evidence forced Hanford to quit, but recommended acceptance to avoid impeachment.
Newark New Jersey George Clinton Payne celebrated his hundredth birthday and declares he is good for twenty more years as a traveling book agent. Fresh air revived him and he plans to stay on his route.
New York Aug 5 Becker charged with murder in Rosenthal killing withdrew plea of not guilty and waived pleading. Case moved to Judge Mulqueen who kept hearing until Wednesday. Hart Becker's counsel moved to attack indictment and to inspect grand jury notes. Coroners probe of Wallon and Webber postponed to Aug 19. City aldermen approve investigation of police department tied to gambling and murder scandal involving Becker.
Round-Up grounds director L G Frazier confirms plans for a reinforced park with 240000 feet of lumber and 100000 shingles, enabling a larger grandstand and bleachers. When done, seating will reach 21000 plus 6000 in new boxes, with 15000 in the extended bleachers and 1000 feet of seating. Permanent stock sheds and corrals will support performances.
Senate passes wool measure 56 to 28 after conference with house. The bill moves to President Taft who is expected to veto it. Beveridge asserts equal rights as a principle of the party in this Washington report.
Chicago July 5 The followers of Colonel Roosevelt meeting in Chicago to protest what they call a square deal denial at the Republican convention renominating Taft, filled the Coliseum with Roosevelt supporters from across the nation. The Progressive party aims to fund its costs through ticket sales of up to 20 dollars, as Southern delegates face division with separate conventions by the Lilly White movement. Senator Dixon and Madill McCormick handle ticket distribution to cover the convention bill, estimated at 250000 dollars. The party pledges home rule and Roosevelt plans a lengthy address outlining the party’s future. primaries will decide candidates for president, vice president, Congress, and vacancies, but not delegates to the national convention.
