Twenty nine years later Mrs. Peyton, grieving widow of Dr. L. F. E., searches Lake Michigan for a final resting place. She repeatedly travels by excursion steamers, scattering flowers on the waters where she believes the Alp steamer wreck lies. Her wish remains that her own ashes rest beside her husband near that far grave.
The conference report on the tariff bill passes the Senate 47 to 51 with seven Republicans opposing and one Democrat aligned in favor. Dolliver condemns the move, vowing not to join what he calls a swindle of the American people.
Washington August 5 President Taft signed the Aldrich Payne tariff bill late this afternoon. Speaker Cannon followed with his signature at 4:18 pm. Taft has gone to the capital to sign as soon as the bill can be delivered to him.
Washington Aug 5 The concurrent resolution changing the leather schedule was adopted by the senate and President Taft was expected to sign the Aldrich Payne tariff bill in the afternoon. The measure is seen as an improvement over the present law though insurgents led by Dolliver and Cummings say it falls short of GOP pledges. Aldrich and Payne express satisfaction. congressmen prepare to depart.
Washington Aug 5 Following Senate adoption of the conference report by 47 to 1 to make the tariff bill a law only leather schedule correction and presidential signature remain. A concurrent resolution will adjust the leather schedule. Republicans Rever-sige Bristow Clapp Cummins Dolliver Lafollette Nelson voted against the conference. McEnerney Louisiana voted in favor. The leather schedule and concurrent resolution were then considered.
The conference report on the urgent deficiency appropriation passed the Senate unaltered and goes to President Taft. Senator Kling of California opened debate on tariff seeking an increase on articles worn by the Overature Man and Dolliver said he would vote against the bill citing objection to the preparation method and a plan to swindle the American people without disclosure.
Washington Aug. 6 lenders of the house framed a plan for the concurrent resolution to correct the leather schedule and secure its passage before adjournment. Other changes, notably transferring cotton bagging and grain sacks to the free Hat, will come in a joint resolution from the senate. Action likely deferred until winter.
The United Miners Journal reports that the American Federation of Labor sent Samuel Gompers to Europe and is covering his travel costs. It alleges letters from Gompers were sold to a newspaper syndicate via weekly mailings, and that the Journal will not publish the letters.

She says her two sisters in Oakland and Vancouver defrauded her of 169000, claiming a pre quake transfer. she began a will naming a friend as sole beneficiary.
Bogota on August 5 reports Valencia elected president by the national congress in session without bloodshed. He succeeds General Rafael Merce who resigned recently by cable.

Capetown, Aug. 5. Ten bodies washed ashore and ten survivors landed in a lifeboat from the English steamship Moor which foundered near here last night. The Maori carried many passengers, exact number unknown. Search parties along the beach seek survivors. Two warships have departed to search for the steamship Waratah with about three hundred passengers nine days overdue from Durban to Cape Town. The ship may have been lost in a cyclone near the coast. A steamer Seey on Rocks at St Davids, Wales, is pinned on rocks amid heavy mist. vessel position precarious with lifeboats alongside.
Deputy Attorney General Cunningham opened an inquiry in Cleveland to determine who should receive the $15,000 Pennsylvania reward for the capture of James Moyle and his wife, the Willie Whitla kidnappers. Patrick O'Reilly, a local saloon keeper, is suspected to receive the reward for tipping police to the Boyles' location on March 23, with arrests soon after.

In St Paul on August 5 Henry Paul robbed St Paul First National Bank taking 8600 from the bank safe. He held a posse at bay for three hours, fatally wounding Ed Larson and mortally wounding William Butler, before being shot and killed by officers at Bear Lake.
St Louis police tied three trunks shipped to Chicago to a kidnapping plot involving Grace and Tomasso Viviano. Ransom demand of 25000 dollars spurred the crime, but Chicago police found only clothing in the trunks. Police theorize the trunks held property of Samuel Turrisi and other members of the gang linked to the Viviano children case.
Spokane dispatch reports the Third regiment sends two battalions via special train from Port George Wright accompanied by officers. The second battalion departs from Fort Lawson and sails on the Buford. Fort George Wright hosts two companies of the First regiment from Vancouver to guard the port until the 26th regiment arrives for a three year stay.
In New York on Aug, Jeffries sailed aboard the George Washington for Bremen. He will be absent about six weeks and has heard nothing further from Jack Johnson. Johnson was due in New York today but missed the plot. Sam Berger, Jeffries’ manager, was authorized to negotiate with Johnson. Attempts to reach Johnson by telephone were unsuccessful.
The death of Lieut. Sutton is under renewed inquiry in Annapolis with all previous defendants present. Mrs. Sutton and Mr. Parker attend as witnesses. Lieut. Utley testified about an automobile ride and a dispute, noting Sutton struck Lieut. Ostermiin from behind.

Washington August 5 The Lincoln pennies face criticism from artists and others who claim the new design is inferior to the Indian penny. Treasury notices say the Lincoln penny is thicker and does not stack well, causing coin machines to malfunction and prompting complaints from institutions using them.
Chicago Aug 5 Heavy voting today by the surface railway employers indicates the fin vering strike will win, labor leaders say. The issue is whether the executive committee is empowered to call a strike. Voting closes at 4 tomorrow morning. results expected at noon. About ten thousand votes are to be cast with precautions against disorder.
A four year old girl named Grace Gibbe traveled from Boise to Ukiah alone, with two train changes and a final leg by Hinge road, arriving near midnight at Hotel Bowman. A lost instruction letter caused initial concern as men searched for the girl’s guardians before she was placed on a Pilot Rock train to Ciloh, to be met by Mrs. Lawrence.

Road plans include electric lines from Baker City to Snake River Wheeler and Union counties linking towns in a rapid transit system.
Washington reports a treasury shrinkage due to prohibition in the year ending June 30. Whiskey tax receipts fell by 5,290,772 to 134,868,034 while beer and other fermented liquors dropped 2,951,205 to 57,456,411. Tobacco tax rose to 51,887,175, up 2,024,423, and oleomargarine taxes declined by 52,107 to 902,197.
Police seek William Haney alleged member of gang that robbed a Canadian Pacific train near Ashcroft British Columbia last June and fatally shot Constable Isaac Decker. Authorities think he is in southern California.
