Vancouver machinists walk out at the Canadian Pacific shops at the scheduled time. Winnipeg and Toronto reports say the strike is general, with about 8000 machinists affected and no non union labor allowed. Leaders forecast no wheels turning on western lines within ten days as strikers gather in Winnipeg.
In Montreal on August 5, two hundred mechanics have quit their posts, signaling a labor action. The move affects local industry as workers walk out amid unresolved wage and shift disputes. Officials await further word as the situation develops.

Constantinople Aug. 5 reports an imminent complete reorganization of the Turkish ministry following the Salonika committee mission. The group presented the Young Turk demands as intermediary between the organization and the sultan, who aims to revolutionize the government with swift changes.
Washington Aug 5 The United Press reported the first information of an attack on the sultan life. The Turkish minister expressed great regret over the attempted assassination.
Count Zeppelin's dirigible balloon broke from its mooring at the Plateau in an electric storm this afternoon. It caught fire and sailed away in smoke. whether anyone was aboard is unknown. The craft is deemed practically destroyed. four workmen were seriously injured by the motor explosion. The count, heartbroken, had worked on the ship for years and received Kaiser-backed support for a new one. Parties search for any remains of the vessel.
Tacoma observers report a two day simulated battle set to begin Monday as Washington and Oregon guardsmen prepare for duty. Troop H, Tacoma’s crack cavalry company, earns camp honors for its seasoned performance, while veterans tease the newer guardsmen during training.
Three about fourteen year old boys from Tacoma rowed nearly a mile on Saturday to save two men from drowning after their small boat capsized. The boys acted on hearing cries for help and quickly reached the distressed men.
J. R. McDonald is held in Greenwood jail on attempted murder charge near Chesaw Washington. He will be held for extradition.
Constantine Algeria Aug 5 Following a terrible earthquake yesterday five hundred to a thousand people were killed in several Algerian towns. Bandits from the desert swept in and fighting with French troops ensued. Hundreds lie in ruins as rescuers are interrupted by clashes. Two thousand natives are homeless and relief measures are underway amid fears of famine as springs run dry in some areas.
Reno on Aug 6 a wealthy businessman Sam Wheeler and his family were halted by three highwaymen outside the city after a half mile chase. Four shots were fired as the robbers searched the auto taking jewelry and cash worth hundreds of dollars. Wheeler’s daughter saved a diamond necklace by concealing it in her mouth. Wheeler dropped a valuable ring and later recovered it before the assailants pursued in a buggy.
Beriberi has been found in a Japanese fruit cannery colony near Visalia California. Health officers investigate after the death of N Haki's wife three days after purchase for 250 dollars. Reported 41 cases in the camp.
The unofficial announcement from Chicago dated August thirty five reports Moses Wetmore of St Louis, a stockholder in the tobacco trust, chosen by Bryan for chairman of the finance committee. Wetmore, known as a trust buster, previously started independent ventures aimed at breaking up the American Tobacco company.

Albert E. Helsel, an ordinary seaman on the Wisconsin, leaped from the quarterdeck as the fleet neared Auckland, after receiving a Honolulu letter from his sweetheart. He refused to reveal its contents, calling it all wrong, and died in the sea during the voyage of the wireless-aboard Georgia. The fleet lies about 1000 miles from Auckland.
Portland August 6 1 year old Jackson Reid killed Charles F Demars while he and his sons fished on Guild Lake after chasing dogs that the Reid children set upon them. Reid bragged about the shooting and planned the attack with his sister bringing a pistol. His mother begged for his release while police consider reform school.
Pendleton grain offices drew crowds as wheat touched 80 cents for the first time in nearly a decade. About 60 000 bushels sold at that price while farmers watched, hoping for 85 cents, but most offered little as strength held. A city resident Mr. C. S. Terpening plans a novel underground irrigation system for his lawn on Trustly street. Cedar boxes three inches square will be buried eight inches deep, three to four feet apart, connected to a surface hydrant and water motor overflow. Boxes will be filled weekly and water will evaporate upward at the roots, avoiding surface irrigation and scorch.
