Portland Aug 3 In a historic move the Willamette River draw bridges stayed shut during specified morning and evening windows despite passage signals. The county court ordered closures from 6:30 to 7 and 7:30 to 8 in the morning and 5:30 to 6 and 6:30 to 7 in the evening. Boatmen appealed to the secretary of war as Captain Shaver of the towboat Shaver tried to whistle through. Federal engineer McIndoe, present but not interfering, said the closing was legal.
Guthrie August 3 Fourteen thousand Negroes are disfranchised by ratified constitutional amendment limiting the franchise. Democrats favored the measure while Republicans opposed it, signaling possible Democratic control of the fall election. Aug 4 Bakerefield Cal local papers report James J Corbett expects to face an unknown challenger said to be Miles McLeod a 27 year old 250 pound college man and athlete from Albany Missouri with two brothers in a family of giants McLeod allegedly signed to enter the ring and is said to be already training under Corbett’s instructions from a strict source in Albany.
In Angeles California on August 3 two robbers entered the pawn shop of JL Shapiro gagged and bound the proprietor's son-in-law BR1 and robbed the safe of about two thousand dollars in jewelry and diamonds. They escaped.
Albuquerque August 3. Accompanied by his doctor Joe Gane former lightweight champion is in the last stage of consumption. He is passing here on the way to Baltimore with oxygen administered by the doctor as a last resort.
The penny fund in New Malden raised 8000 dollars from 370207 pennies to build a permanent mission church. St James has been paid for, and funds continue to collect for another church in the parish.
Seattle August 3 The steel steamer Chipped crashed into the wooden schooner Albion carrying 10 passengers bound for Seattle at Port Angeles off West Point Light early today. The Albion was badly damaged and had to be beached. No one was injured.
Oileago August 3 prices for meat milk butter canned goods dried fruits and flour are ballooning. Forecasts predict October rises of one to two cents a pound for meat and two cents a quart for milk with butter to follow. Dealers cite scarce cattle and hogs as the cause.

Florence Aris Aug 3 three Mexican agitators Ricardo Plore Magon Antonio Villareal and Tiberado Rivers released after three years in territorial prison. They declare support for revolu tion against Diaz and plan to continue the struggle from Los Athrelas. Delegation greets them and demonstrations are planned upon arrival. They were convicted for violation of the Centrality law.
