Balem Aug 3 The state supreme court today upheld the death sentences of Math Janclag and Harry Maley for murder. Janclag killed Mary Mrokar in July 1908 at Oregon City after a jury conviction and appeal.

Jacob Sloper aged 80 was jailed for drunkenness when a cellmate, Charles Johnson, along with John Dougherty, attacked him with a knife. Sloper lay battered in the cell and died. Johnson refused to talk as officers investigated the fatal jailhouse assault in Stockton.
Denver reports Charles H. Moyer was de elected president of the Western Federation of Miners, with B Maloney elected vice president in the August 3 vote.

Ellac Clifford a 24 year old night telegraph operator at the Dretburn road station in New Kensington was attacked by two men who overpowered her and bound her to a chair during an attempted robbery. One thug menaced her with a revolver and forced entry to the safe before she summoned help and was rescued by a posse pursuing the perpetrators.

Frankfort reports Count Zeppelin’s air ship experienced motor trouble ten minutes after takeoff for Cologne, 110 miles away. He landed easily and had mechanics repair the craft before resuming the trial voyage.
Frank Johnson, GO North Fork division foreman, recalls a Chicago tramp named John Freeman who lost his foot on a brake beam when a car wheel severed it. He reportedly rode for over 11 miles before the foot was found near North Fork section house. Freeman remained calm, hobbling to the baggage car at Meacham and later joking through amputation at La Grande Hospital. He gave his Chicago home and sister’s name, says he is about 28 and recovering after surgery.
