A Great Northern and Northern Pacific strike began this morning with Perham reporting general obedience. Most operators joined, with only a few remaining in Montana and Portland. Wires down, trains delayed, and division HQs set as dispatchers quit in protest.
St Paul Aug 2 General Superintendent Slade of the Great Northern and General Manager Horn of the Northern Pacific say securing replacements for vacated positions is harder than first thought. Workers broadly ignore the strike order and freight traffic is badly crippled. The Great Northern and Northern Pacific expect to be able to staff up by Thursday. Reports indicate most union workers except one at Dawson have quit. In Duluth and Superior twenty Great Northern offices workers at Superior and five at Duluth have resigned. replacements not yet found.
Aug 1 Denver by order of President Wilson all motions of the International Telegraphers strike at 6 pm. Eight hundred workers on the Denver and Rio Grande system affected. General Manager Ridgeway says no recognition of the strike and that men are unreasonable in demands. Washington trees in Manchuria, C L Whitney of Walla Walla reports success of fruit-tree shipment to Manchuria. Most trees survived voyage and transplanting, with future shipments planned due to strong demand for nursery stock.
Portland. Closing arguments in the land fraud trial ended at noon. The court then gave jury instructions identical to those in the first trial. The jurors retired to deliberate in the afternoon.
Rioting broke out in San Jo on August 2 during a strike by longehoremen against the Porto Theo steamship company. Police fired on the mob, killing two and wounding about 40, some fatally, amid patrols with carbines. The company reportedly refused an wage increase to 14 gente an hour.

At 4 o'clock tomorrow afternoon the Weston Normal School board of patrons will convene at the Currier and Haley office to receive reports on funds pledged for the next year’s maintenance. President French and Regent Prohstel were in town yesterday, optimistic that the needed amount will be raised, with subscriptions already nearing 8500 dollars. Desperate prisoner Jack Chesterfield trying to blow open the county jail with dynamite and a revolver led to a gaping cell hole. He fired on guards as police and fire crews arrived, was overwhelmed by water from the hose, then shot himself. His wife, who aided an earlier escape from Vancouver, aided this attempt.
Admiral Goodrich declared no whitewashing in the board of inquiry investigating the Bennington explosion. The Solade or Hancock, en route from San Francisco, will transport convicts to Mare Island. The Chicago and Bennington will stay here. Nomen deaths occur today and patients are reported as improving.

W P Temple reports wheat districts north and northwest of town averaging about 30 bushels per acre with excellent quality. Harvest is wide spread across the western portion of the county as large crowds gather at Lehman Springs where over 260 campers occupy the area and new arrivals come in by stagecoaches making the mountain resort a prime Eastern Oregon destination.

He previously headed at Dufur for years and receives a hearty welcome from The Dalles citizens. Meanwhile in Stevens County Washington many sawmill owners shut down temporarily to allow workers to aid farmers in saving a splendid grain crop.
