116 CORPSES ARE GIVEN HASTY BURIAL AT SEA
Halifax April 60 With the bodies of 1276 victims of the ill fated liner Titanic aboard the coffin ship Mackay Bennett returned here this morning and discharged the most gruesome cargo ever brought into port. Among the bodies recovered were two women. One hundred and sixteen others were found too decomposed to bring to port and were buried at sea. Bluejackets patrolled the harbor while a grim scene unfolded at the docks with bodies stacked and partially buried under tarpaulins. The remains of Colonel John Jacob Astor were identified by jewelry, while doubts remained about the identity of George Widener and his valet. Captain Lardner described the scattered, lifelike bodies and the seaworthy conditions. A proposed permanent memorial is discussed and the Mackay Bennett crew will receive double pay. White Star Line will handle valuables via affidavits or public administrators.
