Burlington Rebuilds Chicago to Omaha Rail Line

A Burlington official says by January next year no old track will remain on the 310 mile line west of Chicago except five miles near Ottumwa. The project costs about $100000 per mile, employs 350 workers for over a year, and aims to straighten curves and reduce grades to shave four to five miles from the distance to the Missouri River. The Murray area work is vast with multi million dollar cost and the new route will abandon the present line for a gentler grade through valleys and hills, shortening the trip by about three quarters of a mile.
