Regimental action is described as the 104th receiving honor for bravery. American troops hold a sector during a battle with Roche artillery shelling roads and villages. Troops arrived after a rail trip and were billeted in the area for 48 hours, cheering villagers from freight cars.
East Oregonian reports a restaurant run by J. P. Land in Birth burned to the ground at about o clock. The Bank of Her Ma owned the building with contents by Mr. Ladd. A kerosene lamp caused the blaze, discovered too late for protection measures. Building and contents were total losses with partial contents insured details unclear.
Sheriff Taylor and Deputy Clerk Drayer lead more than two dozen young men from Umatilla county as they board the Portland local for Camp Lewis as part of the second draft quota. Additional men will entrain May 1 for California to join the national army, with several listed by name and town affiliations.
The infant daughter of Mr and Mrs Frank Pritian died the morning of [date]. Funeral services will be held tomorrow morning at 10 o clock at the residence of Mrs Frank Brows, 3403 West Railroad Street.
Lieutenant Marshall Spell, who left with Troop D and has served in various departments in France, reports prefering air travel to riding with Roy Ritner or R Alexander. In Umatilla County 5528 residents are registered for the coming primary. Republicans total 728, Democrats 2264, Progressives 31, Prohibitionists 134, and others 174. There are 1924 men and 262 women among the voters.
The Red Cross May Day Auction and Parade are set for next Wednesday in Mendleton with a big money-raising program. Local committees report strong countywide help as 200 school children, bands, and auction stands prepare. Notables from Penmleton and nearby towns will oversee donated crafts and performances to benefit the county chapter.
Mrs Laura Knox widow of the late S V Knox of Weston died at her brother Charles W Brownfield's home from heart trouble and Bright's disease. Funeral held at Folcomb chapel with Christian ceremony. interment in Olney Cemetery. Born Silver City Nevada Sept 18 1861 she moved to Umatilla County in 1840 and married in 1842. husband died January last. Her only child Grace married Bert Liovi and died in 1901.
Water officials say extended flow to Chapish Springs will add gallons daily by August first, with total supply rising from about one half to three times the prior level. The water commission considers curbside taps and pricing changes into June, while construction crews of 20 work on Chapiteherring project near Pendleton.
British and French forces report intense fighting across the entire Flanders sector. German artillery and gas shells pounded a wide front from Meteren to Voormezeele, with infantry attacks developing and raids yielding prisoners and four machine guns near Neuville Vitasse.
Washington April 21 The war department warns very large American quotas are required soon to replace losses and fill gaps on the west front. The weekly summary stresses manpower is crucial to the war’s outcome and that replacements must be trained and deployed promptly. It notes Americans near Amiens have fought hard while Germans rely on rifles machine guns and mobile logistics to sustain their offensive. The Allied command vows vigorous counterattacks to paralyze German plans and unify actions across Britain France and the other allies.
Roy R. Grant of Spokane writes April 25, 1918 to W. E. Treck urging a memorial for Dell Blanchett, a noted Round-Up performer, and enclosing a $10 donation. He praises Blanchett, proposes a monument on the Round-Up grounds, and envisions the inscription honoring the western cowboy.
Notices prepared to solicit sealed bids for Indian lands on the reservation mark the first such lease event under new Indian area regulations. About 120 men are listed for two leases and a small number for one. Bids must be sealed with certified checks for 16 percent of offered rent. Additional tracts may be offered in July.
Austin Ford and Frank Enbuck, high school correspondents for the Evening Tribune, have entered the naval reserve after passing physical exams. Both are under draft age and await call, designated as second class seamen. Ford will receive his diploma this year while Enbuck remains a junior editor of The Lantern with duties passing to Theodore Heyden.
A traveling recruiting party toured the area to enlist men for the Navy. By nine o'clock only five applicants had been accepted: William Joseph Watter, Austin Jen Ford, Frank Joseph Kobus, W. T. Al Shetter, and Arch Teaser Kahi. Eight applicants were rejected.
Echo Oregonian report from April 7 states Janehs Lew, the seven year old daughter of A. Weow, died at home after an affliction of the heart. The child passed away Sunday. Memorial details were to be announced.
