Montreal April 21 St Ann's convent at St Genevieve near Montreal burned early today. Thirteen men are known to be lost and many villagers sheltered at homes but suffered from cold and lack of clothing. The matron of the home department died attempting to rescue others. Fire precautions were inadequate in the village.
A Montreal dispatch reports about 30 girls believed dead in a convent fire. The casualty toll is feared to rise as firefighters battle the blaze and rescue efforts continue at the scene.
About 100 inmates were in a Montress building when a fire broke out. Many rescued in nightclothes faced cold, wind, and shock. At least 9 children and several elderly women died. Sister Aagetaria perished trying to save them. Fire brigade absent. Montreal aid only later. Names and ages of the dead and missing listed.
Fire in the Southern Pacific office in the Perry building destroyed thousands of railroad tickets this morning. The loss may cause duplication troubles for ticket salers and trouble for those who purchased returns as the ending sections were damaged.
