G P Rixford of the USDA Bureau of Plant Industry told the Pacific Association of Scientific Societies that the Smyrna type fig in California could rival Asia Minor. He cited the San Joaquin valley climate as superior, with Meander valley conditions being less favorable. He noted rainfall and frost issues, irrigation needs, and concluded the outlook for California's fig industry is extremely promising due to climate and expansion inland, though frost can affect capri figs in some years.
