The EME Court plans a term starting the first Monday of the month with cases from Malheur Umatilla Harney and other counties. Several appeals list attorneys and respondents including Smith Loud Rand Phelps How Howland and McCourt. No major landmark cases expected. term may extend to complete compromised or continued matters.

Ogden Utah April storm on Great Salt Lake damages Lucin cutoff grade as waves wash over the roadbed and freight service is abandoned. Emil Roeski, found guilty of Bauder death, was sentenced in Chicago to life imprisonment. He is the fourth car barn gang member convicted. Jurors said it remained unclear that Roeski fired the fatal shot. Marx testified he fired intending to kill Roeski, and an unintended youth's death occurred in a saloon.
Yellowstone Journal notes severe losses on the north side of the Yellowstone with sheep and cattle. John Davidson near Lee reports about 3 000 sheep lost from 15 000. James Donaldson near Jorian loses 400 to 500 from 12 000 to 16 000. Drifters hardest hit, some wiped out, others with hay supplies mitigating losses. Cattle deaths observed on trails. one witness counted 160 carcasses along a road. Garhel and Wilke survived a freezing night in St Vincent’s Hospital. Mark Williams of Portland plans Pendleton home, previously with C B Troutman.
A Wellington street factory fire in Toronto sparked explosions and a fierce blaze that destroyed over 30 buildings. Fire Chief Thompson was fatally injured and Fireman Dowkes is missing. Montreal and Buffalo sent aid as winds shifted toward residential areas, with losses estimated between 10 and 15 million dollars.
The Furnish warehouse has received seven or eight sacks of wool from Wallowa County and Yakima bought by Joe Sheurman. He will hold the wool for Hale days and sell this year and next, aiming to profit from the early clips. He paid 31 a ton and expects about 0 to 1 cent per unit at sale, with likely gains.

Portland April 20 The Democratic state convention in Oregon debated Hearst delegates to the national convention. The anti instruction faction prevailed, and the national delegates were chosen uninstructed. The ticket includes Supreme Judge Thomas ODay and others, with Chamberlain favored for governor. Delegates to the national convention named from Portland Eugene Roseburg and other cities. Hearst influence struggled against the uninstructioned result.
Report from Yong Ching on the Korean coast says attackers burned all Japanese houses in the city Derelict Contact Mines were found and destroyed 40 miles from Cape Chan Gung by the Japanese fleet April 20. Meanwhile Chinese arrests in La Grande for manufacturing opium from raw drugs occur, with two merchants held on $1,000 bonds each. A suit filed by Stewart Holmes of Seattle against A V Stone seeks $590.80 for goods. Carter and Raley are the attorneys.
La Grande April 20. Bromwell field superintendent of the sugar factory says the plant may not operate here this season unless beet acreage in Grand Ronde Valley is increased. The company plans 1800 acres this year, possibly growing to 2400, else the factory may be moved to Pendleton or Echo. Echo and Umatilla County are to host large experimental crops to test suitability of the soil and climate.
Satisfied with assessment, Deputy Nye notes city work progressing and property owners cheerfully accept the valuation. The town-wide property values mirror county land rates, and the revised tax levy drops from 46 to 34 mills, freeing several hundred thousand dollars previously uncollected.

Post office rush clears backlog after five days of undelivered mail. Two wagon loads arrived from the midnight train and staff worked overtime to distribute and transfer items. By noon the glut was cleared and service will run smoothly with prompt delivery restored.
White Bull appeared drunk and was sent to the reservation after arraignment. Harry Cumming, A. W. Trophem, and John Willielt were arraigned for vagrancy. their cases were continued until witnesses could be secured. Police kept continuous duty overnight as trials await.
A marriage license was issued this morning to Alma Upton of Chehalis Washington and Mise Aimee Dobson of this county confirming their intention to wed.
